What glorious weather, its been fabulous doing hawk walks in the sunshine, its also been lovely to get Trinity flying again following her summer holiday, she is looking beautiful with all her new feathers, she's had a beak trim and is all ready for hawk walks and winter hunting, within 10 minutes she was following on and being her amazing self. Harris hawks are clever birds and know the score, getting them back into work after a summer lay off is so easy and that's why I love them so much!

I love this time of year, the Woodland changes to its autumn colours and fungi starts popping up all over the place. It’s the most fascinating stuff even Sherlock was intrigued by it on our Hawk Walk today.

I have not posted about Trinity in a while as she has been having some time off over the summer and growing some beautiful new feathers. She is looking very beautiful and almost ready to start her winter hunting season. Here she is looking very proud and I am very excited to get out flying with her in the next couple of weeks.

Thankyou to Michelle Essenson for this lovely photo taken on Thursday at Chawton House of me with Texas my Red Tailed Hawk, he had his wing round me and was giving me the benefit of his wisdom on squirrel catching!
Tex is a lovely chap however stubborn and very different to work with compared to a Harris Hawk. Red tails are a species from the USA and are their most common bird of prey , they are much like our common Buzzard just bigger and are in fact a buzzard. We favour them in the UK for hunting grey squirrels, unfortunately Tex is a tad lazy and often just watches the squirrel rather than attempting to catch it, because that is hard work and takes a bit of effort! !

We had lots of entries into our competition yesterday but no one correctly guessed the number of feathers in the vase , I am going to keep the answer a secret and be using it again at Alresford show in a few weeks, but most people were quite a long way out. A couple were close , 🤞

This was Neo when I collected him at 17 weeks old in July 7 years ago, Neo was the start of my journey into falconry and I could never have imagined what that awesome little hawk would be the start of. We learned so much together and never a day passes that I don't think of that little due and the huge personality he had.
There is nothing more beautiful than a Harris Hawk in Juvenile plumage , they are just gorgeous, 😍

Guinness 😍😍 he’s such a quirky little character and has developed so much in the almost 3 years he’s been with me and the team. He caught a rat this week and was so damn proud of himself and I was too. We didn’t really gel at the start but I have really put a load of effort in with the little fella and it’s really starting to pay off. Very proud of him. 🤗

Here you can clearly see Sherlock’s Nictitating membrane. This is a transparent or translucent third eyelid present in some animals that can be drawn across the eye to protect and moisten it while maintaining a level of vision, for Sherlock when he’s diving into a Bramblebush after his dinner it will protect his precious eye and vision. Losing eyesight for an eyesight driven hunter is a death sentence.

Nita and Neo

Neo will be 2 in a couple of weeks time, hard to put into words how much he means to me, Hawks are a long term commitment and hopefully we will still be out having fun together in 25 years all be it that we will both be a bit slower by then!
