Far Nook Self Catered Cottage

Far Nook Self Catered Cottage Far Nook is a gorgeous self catered holiday cottage in Ambleside in the Lake District. With 4 good

Far Nook is a traditionally built detached Lakeland stone property set in its own grounds only a five minute walk from the centre of Ambleside and all its facilities including shops, restaurants, visitor attractions and even a cinema. The house has been arranged with our guests’ comfort in mind with four individual bedrooms all with their own bathroom/shower rooms. There is a lounge with wood burn

ing stove and a separate TV lounge, well-equipped kitchen/diner, washing facilities and beautiful landscaped gardens. Many walks can be enjoyed from our front door including The Fairfield Horseshoe, Loughrigg Fell, Wansfell, Red Screes, The Coffin Trail and many more. We have safe storage for bikes and drying facilities for wet weather clothing. Far Nook has private off road parking available for all guests and we are only 300 yards from the nearest bus stop. For the best part of the decade preceding June 2015 Far Nook was run as a very successful and popular B&B by a lovely couple Marian and Tony. Far Nook is now available as a self catered holiday cottage through Lakeland Retreats. What we have strived to achieve is to maintain the feeling of homeliness that we experienced when we first visited the property, whilst combining this with access to all of the facilities in the house.

A few photos from our brief visit to Far Nook last week. It was unseasonably wet, even by the Lakes’ standards! However, the sun did venture out a few times too. Photos are of a red squirrel we saw whilst out and about, foxgloves and ancient trees at Grizedale Forest, and the sun shining on Derwent Water. Also, the new crockery for Far Nook, and a replacement whirligig too (not the most exciting things sorry).

We do love the Lakes in May. We mainly had a restful week at Far Nook, but also stayed on top of a few of the regular maintenance chores. A selection of the week’s photos below.

The windows downstairs at Far Nook have been upgraded (we will do upstairs next year funds permitting). One bay window left to go as the new stone sills are on their way from the local quarry. A bit more decorating to do, a deep clean and we will be ready for our first guests of 2023 in early March.

Photos are of the sun room at the front (the white pillars are to be painted), bay window in the lounge, the outside of the renovated utility room, and the frames still to be fitted.

Then because there is only so much excitement others can feel about windows, we have a few of a short trek to Rydal caves. And finally the starters at Kysty in Ambleside. It was the first time we’d dined there, great food and lovely people - we will definitely go back.

Ambleside in the sunshine from a week ago. And ominous looking clouds over Tarn Hows.

We also took the opportunity to meet with the fitter to prepare to have the downstairs windows replaced in January/February 2023. The upstairs ones will have to wait a year or so! But photos of windows are not that exciting, hence we posted a bit of local scenery instead.

Hurrah,

After just over 2 weeks of toiling, we finally managed to get the Wi-Fi working again yesterday 🎉.

We’d like to thank our various guests over the last couple of weeks who have been remarkably patient and understanding.

What probably happened (Openreach and TalkTalk are tight lipped on this) is that someone nearby had broadband fitted, there were not enough ports available (on the card in the local cabinet) so the engineer snaffled ours. Hence why it took a lot longer to fix.

A quick lesson for TalkTalk - it does not matter how many routers you send if they’ve got nothing to connect to.

Two quick lessons for Openreach - don’t let your engineers (or subcontractors) use other people’s ports. And please show up to your appointments (they missed a few, either a complete a no show or the failure to ring to be let in).

If we never have to speak to TalkTalk customer support again I’ll be delighted! More seriously though, for guests if Wi-Fi ever does go down please let Lakeland Retreats know and between us and them we will get it sorted asap.

On a brighter note, it gave Emma and I a great excuse for a night in the Lakes. Also, we really like guests having fast Wi-Fi as both part of the service and so they can send videos like this one from in July (in comments below).

We had a guest chef for the night a couple of weeks ago for Andy’s (delayed) gala birthday dinner. We do love May in the Lakes, still a coin toss between May and September for our favourite month! The garden was well into bloom so that might swing it!

We are welcoming our first set of guests with our new agents Lakeland Retreats today.

Having been closed for maintenance we managed to get a lot done - some rooms given a fresh coat of paint, paving slabs and driveway power washed, duvets and pillows dry cleaned, various trees trimmed, a shed painted and a chimney swept!

Guests will not have to be eagle-eyed to spot that the windows were not replaced after all. Unfortunately the installers are going in to voluntary liquidation, obviously we are very angry and disappointed but are unable to say much more at the moment. But onwards and upwards, we will aim to restart the process of renewing the windows later in the year.

Here’s to another lovely year in the Lakes.
