I'm pretty fortunate to be able to work in such wonderful places and with such lovely people. Today though has been exceptional, climbing with Roddy - who I've climbed with numerous times over the years - and his 11 year old daughter. Roddy led us up Middlefell Buttress whilst Elizabeth played competent 2nd, removing all the gear and storing it efficiently on her harness. At the end of the day, even though she was hungry and tired, she didn't want to leave the crag. Instead she was asking loads of good questions and wanting to learn how to place gear.

A flippin' great day :-)

Thankfully it isn't often we need to turn back on a walk. But if it feels like the right thing to do, we will. Safety will always come first.
Today I was due to be guiding a father and son on Scafell Pike. However, the overnight rains were heavy than expected, particularly in the west of the district. The Wrynose Pass was a river strewn with rocks, Hardknott Pass was similar. Huge amounts of standing water in Eskdale and Wasdale, with Wast Water at a very high level.
So I knew the Brown Tongue route to Scafell Pike would be out due to the river crossing at Lingmell Ghyll. Considering the already partially flooded roads and continuing rain, it felt like our best option was to get out of Wasdale quickly. So we had a short walk up to the Lingmell Ghyll crossing, then returned and fled from the valley.
The walk can be rescheduled for next spring and hopefully a better weather day for it.

Whilst out we had loads of good and positive discussion surrounding mountain safety and risk awareness. Perfect day for it really.

The photos here show the river crossing and a short way below. the crossing - which is where a walker could quickly end up if they slipped whilst crossing.

Rock Climbing at Brown Howe this morning with 2 families (8 people). First time we've used this venue and won't be the last. It offers some really nice climbs in a sheltered setting with possibly the easiest access of any Lake District crag :-)

Yesterday morning I was in Stickle Ghyll with a stag party. The photos clear up who the stag was ;-) and show how 'pleased' Olly was to be in such a cool outfit!! The good sport finished the trip by ditching the warm wetsuit and taking to the plunge pool in only the mankini - ouch

Weather was amazing, more like a summers day than mid-autumn

Nab Scar and Alcock Tarn this morning with Nigel.
The plan had been to aim for Fairfield, but once at Nab Scar the wind was doing its best to blow us over so we diverted to lower ground and more shelter. Autumnal colours are at their best just now, get out if you can

Lots more navigation today with Andrew. This time up on Cold Pike. Weather was forecast to be much better, but they got that wrong, was actually worse than yesterday! Plenty of the wet stuff falling on us and a strong wind to help keep us chilled ;-)

So all the right ingredients for a good day of mountain navigation. We checked out Ring Contours, Spot heights, re-entrants, spurs, tarns, linear features, and used some contouring techniques. The very poor visibility all day made this all nice and real too. Good times :-)

I could say the weather was moody today, but to put it more accurately, it was minging wet! Still the low visibility is good for navigation work and that's what was on today, so all good. Hopefully a bit drier tomorrow as we head higher up into them hills
