Annan Academy News

Annan Academy News Annan Academy is a 6 year comprehensive Secondary school based in the south west of Scotland. It has a role of approximately 950 pupils.

Annan has nine cluster primary schools which are; Carrutherstown, Cummertrees, Eastriggs, Elmvale, Gretna; Hecklegirth; Newington, Springfield and St Columbus. Visitors to the Academy will notice that while most of the school buildings are modern, there is a part which dates back further. The old building incorporating the bell-tower dates back over a century to 1895. This is a constant reminder o

f the school's history and its origins. Recent refurbishment has created an enhanced learning environment for staff and pupils. A leading example of this is the new Performing Arts building situated towards the rear of the school. At Annan Academy we have a hardworking, dedicated and passionate staff who deliver the curriculum in an innovative and engaging manner. In order for this to be achieved pupils at Annan Academy are expected to give their best in all facets of their education. The school has a uniform policy which all pupils must adhere to; shirt, tie, black trousers/skirt/dress, black footwear. As a school we offer a vibrant extra-curricular programme to all pupils providing them with the necessary skills to be successful in their chosen career path. Highlights of this include a number of educationally relevant excursions, the opportunity to be involved in a variety of sporting teams and the production of junior and senior shows. Annan Academy is also working towards the LGBT Schools Charter. We committed to this programme in Autumn 2018. The programme has been developed to support schools to undertake training and review policies, practice and resources to make sure that Annan Academy meeting legislative needs and is as inclusive as we can be. More info can be found at: https://www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/

We look forward to involving community partners, parents and pupils, both past and present in the achievements and successes of our young people.

Yesterday, we welcomed Langholm and Lockerbie Academy for another great U14 rugby festival! With 27 girls and 58 boys taking to the field we seen some competitive games, powerful tackles and speedy trys.

Highlight of the day was watching our development boys’ team grow in confidence with every game after only a few sessions.

Friday 28th February is Purple Friday.

This means that pupils can add a touch of purple to their school uniform to show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Please note this is NOT a non-uniform day. Some suggestions include wearing a purple shirt instead of the black or white one, a purple tie in place of school tie, Purple socks or tights, purple nails or hairband etc.

Purple Friday is a day to celebrate the spirit of the LGBT+ community and our allies. Learn more and find out how you can take part.

Speed, Distance & Time
Miss. Todd’s S2 class have been developing their knowledge and understanding of Speed, Distance & Time. Today we headed out onto Solway Street to be human speed cameras; calculating the speed of cars travelling on the road.

How did we do this?
First, we measured out 50 meters using a trundle wheel. Then we used a stopwatch on our mobiles to time how long it took a car to travel the 50 meters.
Once we had enough data we went back to class and calculated the speed in meters per second. Using a formulae we changed our speeds into miles per hour. We caught 3 cars speeding! But only just - 21, 24 and 24 mph.

Netball Success 🏃‍♀️

Both our junior netball teams performed amazingly last week at our away fixture against Dumfries High School.

Annan A won their first match against DHS A 40-0 - An amazing result with lots of goals scored and none conceded. Player of the match was awarded to Jess Creighton (S3)

Annan B then went on to win their first match against DHS B 23-0. Another fabulous result for the squad! Player of the match awarded to Captain - Erin Mckenna (S2).

Annan A then played DHS B and had their second win of the evening with the score finishing 50-0. This meant that across both games the squad scored a whopping 90 goals and did not concede a single one! Player of the match was Captain - Sian Vickers (S2).

Finally, Annan B played DHS A and unfortunately due to injury played with a squad of 6 for the last two quarter. I am delighted to say that despite being a player down, the squad were victorious in winning 14-9. A special mention to Chloe Walton (S3) who had a tough gig of marking two attackers in the game!

The girls have worked hard all season playing against numerous teams across the region. Well done for all your hard work- the regional finals await for us next month! 🖤💛
