Overseas visitors to Northern Ireland up +11%

Strong growth from all market areas
Tourism Ireland has welcomed the +11% growth in overseas visitors to Northern Ireland in the first nine months of 2015, announced by NISRA today. The figures confirm that we welcomed more than 1.5 million overseas visitors between January and September, +11% more than the same period in 2014.

Significant growth was recorded from all market areas – see table below. Holiday visitors accounted for almost half a million overseas visitors (+12%); and, more importantly for the economy, revenue from overseas visitors to Northern Ireland grew by +9% during this period (£378 million).

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Figures published by NISRA today show that overseas visitors to Northern Ireland increased by +11% during the January to September period in 2015. GB visitor numbers increased by +11% and visitor numbers from the rest of the world also grew by +11%. Overseas holidaymakers increased by +12%, with particularly strong growth in GB holidaymakers (+19%). Overseas visitors delivered £378 million for the local economy, up +9% on the same period in 2014.

“Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that tourism growth continues in 2016. We will place a major focus on Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink, inviting people who love great food to come and discover the best of local produce and have the chance to experience the spectacular scenery and wonderful coastline which makes Northern Ireland so special. Tourism Ireland will highlight The Gobbins Cliff Path around the world, while continuing to place a major focus on other iconic experiences like Titanic Belfast, the Giant’s Causeway and our unique National Trust properties. We will continue to target people of Ulster-Scots descent; and to promote Northern Ireland as a top golf and business tourism destination.”
