Grade 2 listed barns in medieval village of Appleton Le Moors in North York Moors National Park. In 2012 we had a mid-life crisis (although one of Ian’s colleagues told us we had already passed that marker). We have always been customer focused in our careers and had dreamed about taking control of our lives and running our own business. So, we took the plunge and decided to sell our house and set

up a self-catering business for large groups of friends and family to meet up in style and comfort. We have put our hearts and souls into the restoration of this characterful luxurious self catering barn and tried to think of every detail you need to make your stay truly memorable. There is space to spread out in & relax, space to come together in. 7 generous en suite double bedrooms mean no one has the short straw. The Long Barn is the perfect place to escape to with family and friends for a special celebration in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

Imagine arriving at the Long Barn on a Friday night with a group of friends.

And discovering that there really is no short straw bedroom.

Which one would you choose?

Happy Friday. 😊

We are starting to get Christmas ready in the Long Barn. Here’s a lovely wreath made for us by one of our neighbours Lindsay.

We’ve just decorated the trees in our farm house and they go up in the Long Barn in a few days.

Are your decorations up yet?

Thinking about a few Christmas recipes to try out over the next few weeks. 🎄

As well as some much loved favourites. ❤️

Some of which may make it into the Long Barn welcome hamper.

Any guesses what we’ll be making from these ingredients?

Huge thank you to our neighbour Jim who lent us his chainsaw.

And good work to the Long Barns resident lumberjack. ❤️🪓

Thank you Beth The Florist - North Yorkshire for delivering these beautiful flowers up to us this afternoon.

Above and beyond through the rain and wind of Storm Darragh!

We highly recommend Beth if your like flowers or other floral decorations. And she can deliver free of charge up to the Long Barn.

Hopefully in better weather! ☀️😎

We don’t like to go too early with our Christmas decorations. Mainly as we love real trees; they’ll be dry twigs by Christmas.

However……

We started a tradition during lockdown of the Appleton Christmas Advent Windows.

Jackie “persuades” a band of 24 willing volunteers to do a window a day from 1 December.

We’ll do a weekly roundup between now and Christmas.

This is the first. Hand made by Ian and Jackie for the Reading Room. And expertly lit by Ian. 🎄🎄

Are your decorations up yet! 🌲🎄

Bit of excitement in our local pub, the The Moors Inn . Appleton - le - Moors today.

It’s not every Friday that James Norton pops in for lunch. 😂 ❤️

Is your email groaning with Black Friday emails?

Are you fed up with the hundreds of ‘100 gifts for under £100’ articles?

Fed up of all the big impersonal corporates?

And do you know a coffee lover?

Then why not support one of our wonderful local businesses such as Roost Coffee

David and Ruth have been keeping Long Barn guests caffeinated with Tonto coffee beans for years.

And are about to launch their limited edition Christmas letter boxes.

Do you know what a North York Moors National Park Champion is?

We love living in the North York Moors National Park and want all our guests to experience this wonderful place to its full. Staying self-catering in the Long Barn, means that you can chose exactly where you want to explore and spend your time. But with so much choice, it can be overwhelming. It can be easy to default to the busiest touristy spots. And so, miss out on some of the very best hidden gems and places to go.

Earlier this year, we were chosen along with a small group of other local businesses to become Champions for the North York Moors.

This means we work closely with the National Parks team to spread the word about what makes the North York Moors so special.
We 100% support the ethos of enjoying the North York Moors as well as looking after it.

As part of this, we are accredited in all the North York Moors friendly schemes - - cycling, dark skies, nature and walking. Our goal is to go the extra mile to support visitors who want to take part in these activities.

We are constantly looking out for hidden gems, insider tips and recommendations to share with our guests. It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it! And if you follow us on our social media, you’ll see us share all sorts of information to make your visit as special as possible.

Whether it’s an off the beaten track walk, a hidden gem of a village to visit, or the best place for cake, we will keep making sure we continually update our list of recommendations.

We also share lots of information on our weekly blogs. We are often contacted by people who aren’t staying with us but would like more information about a particular post. Which we are more than happy to do. It’s all part of being a North York Moors champion.

We also support making the North York Moors as accessible as possible. We are proud to work with Dementia Adventure who have run 9 supported adventures from the Long Barn. This means those living with dementia and their loved ones can experience 5 days of unwinding and exploring the local area.

As champions, we are also aware of our environmental impact and look at all we can do to be sustainable. Sometimes it’s the big stuff like our biomass boiler. And sometimes the smaller things. Read more about our approach to sustainability here.

Whether staying at the Long Barn, or visiting the North Moors independently, we hope that you love it as much as we do.

Get in touch if we can help with any questions you have about visiting the North York Moors. If you're staying at the Long Barn. Or even if you're not!

Do you watch Gardener’s World?

Inspired by , Jackie has pruned the climbing roses.

Hard to believe that from these bare twigs, white roses will return in June.

Fingers crossed.

The first Christmas Fair of the season was at White Syke Fields which is one of our favourites. Fantastic range of stalls from local small businesses.

There are so many Christmas fairs in the area from now on. So if you are visiting us, we’ll let you know our recommendations.
