Dominican Republic - Fast Facts:

Louise Rush - Once in a Lifetime Holidays is currently out in Dominican Republic, scouting for the perfect hotels for our clients and getting a feel for the area. None of the team have been, until now...

🇩🇴 Caribbean holiday hotspot!
🇩🇴 The time is GMT-4 (currently 5 hours behind UK due to British summer time).
🇩🇴 Average flying time 9hr 15 mins direct (my outbound was closer to 8 hrs 30 mins).
🇩🇴 Local currency is the Dominican
Peso. £10 is roughly 710 DOP. US dollars are widely accepted.
🇩🇴 The country shares it’s island with Haiti.
🇩🇴 Santo Domingo is the capital, a colonial city with UNESCO world heritage status.
🇩🇴 The annual carnival held in February is a colorful tradition with elaborate costumes and lively parades.
🇩🇴 DR is home to the highest peak in the Caribbean, (Pico Duarte) as well as the lowest point (Lake Enriquillo).
🇩🇴 Sargassum (floating seaweed) is generally worse during the summer months as the hurricanes wash it to shore but it is unpredictable and like many places. Some resorts/ areas don’t experience seaweed at all. Note - Dreams Macao doesn’t get seaweed at all. This is now abundant in many areas of the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
🇩🇴 Some of Jurassic Park 3 was filmed in the Dominican Republic…
🇩🇴 And leading on from that one… DR is known for it’s amber that often contains prehistoric fossils, making it a valuable resource for both jewellery and scientific study.
🇩🇴 Baseball is the most popular sport.
🇩🇴 Some beaches have golden sand and green water and some have pure white sand and blue oceans so choose wisely depending on your preference!
🇩🇴 The Atlantic Ocean merges with the Caribbean Sea so some beaches tend to be choppy waters, unsuitable for swimming.
🇩🇴 Mosquitos are a thing. Use bug spray from the your hotel - it’s much more effective than what we get in the UK.
🇩🇴 Lake Enriquillo is the largest saltwater lake in the Caribbean and home to crocodiles, iguanas, and flamingos.
🇩🇴 DR one of the Caribbean's largest economies, with major industries including tourism, agriculture (especially sugarcane, coffee, and cocoa), and mining.
🇩🇴 Before the arrival of the Europeans, the island was inhabited by the Taíno people. Many words, such as "hurricane", "canoe", and "barbecue", originate from the Taínos.
🇩🇴 DR is the birthplace of merengue dancing.
🇩🇴 Sanoa island is a paradise island baby sister to Dominican Republic and used for scenes in Pirates of the Caribbean… today we’re going there on a catamaran!!

Best for Christmas Lights and Traditional Festive Cheer. Christmas markets spread out amongst the old town. You will find traditional gifts on offer from wooden toys to artisan handmade soaps. Wander the markets in beautiful lights, as the place glows underneath the Christmas lights.

2. Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪

Best for trendy gifts and winter sports, including tobogganing, ice skating. There are approximately 80 Christmas markets spread across town, even have one dedicated to dogs. A truly wonderful Christmas experience.

3. Salzsburg, Austria 🇦🇹

Best for Christmas Carols and Ancient Traditions. The home of the Sound of Music, immerses you in to the traditions of the market from 15th century. Join in the daily carol concert for optimum Christmas Cheer.

4. Bohemia, Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Best for Christmas atmosphere and beautiful architecture. You can lose yourself in the aroma of freshly baked Christmas cookies, whilst being surrounded by the twinkling fairy lights in town.

5. Bruges, Belgium 🇧🇪

Best for romance. There are 2 main markets but you can warm yourself fireside in one of the winter bars before following the mesmerising Light Experience Trail or opt for the romantic ice skating in this gorgeous setting.

Today I was lucky enough to attend a Princess Cruises family day - it was a real treat for us all!

An early morning start at Southampton docks and we were greeted by the overwhelming size and beauty of the Sky Princess.

We enjoyed a snippet of amazing productions on offer, live music, womens football on the big screens over the pools, delicious selection of food, ice cream and drinks and a very warm welcome from all the Princess crew.

Sky Princess has just returned from 2 weeks in the Mediterranean before heading off to the Norwegian Fjords this afternoon.

Fun facts:

Travelling from Bournemouth Airport is a breeze... ✈️
..and I'm not talking about the wind and rain today 🌧🌂

5 reasons I love flying from Bournemouth:

1. Convenience - You can walk from the car park, across the road in to the terminal building, not having to rely on busses or pick ups. When you land there is no walking for miles to get to passport control, then a trek to get to your car - we all know that when we land after a holiday that you just want to get home.

2. Security is quiet and quick. Being a smaller airport the queues are a lot shorter. We had cabin bags, and checked in online, so went straight through security in about 5 minutes.

3. Good regional airport that flies to a total of 35 destinations, in 18 different countries - including Spain, France, Turkey, Greece and Italy.

4. There tends to be only ever be one flight taking off at any time (maybe two). No delays in all the years we have flown from Bournemouth.

5. If you do check in your luggage. There is no long wait or confusion of where your bags can be picked up - just collect and go (via security obviously)

Why not give Bournemouth a try for your next departure - you won't be disappointed 💙✈️

Yesterday we had our team meeting and we decided to go for a relaxed outdoor space.

We then enjoyed dinner with one of our favourite companies who look after our clients incredibly well. It was here that our 2023 conference was announced.

The internet can be less expensive (not always) as there is no human interaction. It is transactional and relies on your own decision making. You can spend hours, if not days of your time searching, (quite often lots of stress in the process), rather than engaging in the services of an expert.

‘More than Once...’ is a choice of using an expert to the point of booking, to ensure you make the right choice - however the rest of your transaction will be online.
