Water is life.
It is a blessing to have rain in such abundance, while other areas are struggling with droughts and fire risk, we have to deal with wet tourists.

As a follow-up to my summer & August rainfall post below, here's the official, extrapolated summer rainfall stats from the Met Office which have just been published. These compare 2024 summer rainfall against the 1991 - 2020 running average, and map the percentage change seen this summer.

As expected, the Met Office suggests a wetter than average summer everywhere in our area, with a *much* wetter than average summer near the Cuillin and Kintail mountains. There is still a quite wide variation of rainfall (anything from 110% to >170% of average rainfall) across the region.

This suggests the local data isn't miles out, and overall the analysis I published yesterday broadly fits with what the Met Office have seen in their data. Which is good 👍

Are you looking for a good place to learn about living in harmony with the land, connect to nature and grow as a person?

We have space available on our gorgeous ancient 15 acre Rock off the coast of the Isle of Skye. We may be biased, when we say it is the most beautiful place on the West Coast of Scotland.

We offer a moneyless exchange for volunteers who want to help us for a little while.

We offer a bed in a caravan and vegan food in exchange for 25 hours of work a week. You'll get a chance to be part of our community, where we share chores, work in a team or work on our own projects.

We are a curious community where we inspire each other on a nature connection and permaculture learning journey.

Public transport to our Rock is easy by train to Mallaig and a ferry ride across to Skye.

We have fast WIFI and 4G, so online connections are easy to maintain.

The Rubha Phoil community is looking for people with a wide range of skills, from food growers, vegan cooks, social media geeks, office and handy people to project managers.

A word of warning is in order: you may fall in love with this place as much as we are 😉

Best sitspot in a while. The sun still has energy in it, the sea is calm. The seals and shags have plenty to eat. Two herons were chasing each other. Bird alarmcalls directed me to a new discovery I can't mention on here. Excited!
