The Old Shippon Holiday Cottage

The Old Shippon Holiday Cottage Situated within the beautiful Peak District National Park, The Old Shippon is a cosy holiday retreat for up to two people, for short stays or long breaks.

Located on the edge of the small upland village of Alstonefield, the holiday cottage lies behind the owners’ property, with extensive views in all directions and footpaths that begin as you step out of the front gate. In its earlier life, the cottage has been both an antique shop and a barn (a ‘shippon’ is an old English word for a cattle barn). Dating back to the mid-19c, it’s now a cosy retreat,

offering:

* Double bedroom
* Well-equipped kitchen with dining area
* Comfortable lounge with wood-burner
* Bathroom/WC with electric shower
* TV, DVD and wifi
* Bed linen, towels and toiletries
* A range of indoor games and books
* Outside eating area and garden
* Secure cycle storage. On arrival, guests are treated to a ‘welcome pack’ such as fresh scones, home-made jam and milk in the fridge. A basket of logs is supplied. For walkers, Milldale and the much-loved stepping stones at Dovedale are nearby. There are several pubs within easy reach, all offering good food and real ales.

In a world that seems increasingly loud, I think it helps to know that there are quiet spaces left, even if you can't always reach them. There are still lanes where the only noises you'll hear are the rustle of leaves blowing along them, and where the winter sunrise seems to drift in lazily to wake the village. When the volume of life gets too high, these are the places I retreat to. I hope you can all find your own Alstonefield.
