๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ"How can I sum up my volunteering in 3 words - absolutely life changing!
I booked my volunteering through TMR because when I was researching different volunteering companies, TMR were the most approachable and friendly and even arranged a video call to discuss my many questions I had, which made the whole process stress-free and exciting.

I was volunteering in Tanzania doing the Childcare programme and as a solo traveller I must admit I was a little nervous but as soon as I arrived I was made to feel like part of the Tanzanian family. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly and helped me really embrace their culture.

Despite my frizzy hair and mosquito bites, I enjoyed my time there so much that I even extended my stay. The kids at childcare made it an easy decision to stay that little bit longer, they all stole my heart with their daily hugs, singing and dancing and smiles.

Going to childcare every day did not feel like work, I actually missed going at the weekends. When you arrive the whole school are in a big circle singing songs and dances which I ended up learning with them. Seeing how the children and their families all live in such poor conditions, yet they are a big community filled with joy and happiness. This was something that really humbled me, that even 1 small little marshmallow can brighten up a child's day; realising how extremely privileged we are back home. If I could put a smile on the kids faces and help make their day that little bit better, then I know I done what I came out here to do.

I got so close to one of the little boys and tried to support him and his family the best I can. Bringing the family out for dinner was the most heartwarming and wholesome experience, and was even gifted a chicken by his grandmother saying she has nothing to give me so gives me something valuable to them, this, I will remember forever.

Not only did I make truly lifelong friends with other volunteers, I feel I made great friends with staff and other locals too, people I know I will always stay in touch with. From everyone coming together for quiz nights and all the activities TMR arrange to being given advice on how to best spend my fundraising money, I have always felt the love and support during my whole experience.

The Comfy hostel was amazing - the beds were comfortable, the food was great, we had a huge communal area for everyone to be together and the staff always went out of their way to help you. Being in a gated accommodation and having our own drivers made me feel incredibly safe and I will be forever grateful for all the start here. TMR really did well with choosing an amazing team here.

For anyone thinking of volunteering, I cannot recommend TMR enough. I would say just go for it, you won't regret it.
Words from Daniel who became a good friend to me in Tanzania - My blood is Irish but my heart is African."

๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ "I would recommend this programme to anyone and everyone. I felt safe my entire trip, the food and accommodation were great, and it was a lovely group of people.

I volunteered in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks where I had the opportunity to work on the Sea turtle project. Before I arrived in Sri Lanka the team were helpful in answering any questions, providing loads of info and getting all volunteers in contact with each other.

The transfer to and from the airport was easy and I had no trouble finding the group once I landed which is something I was nervous about. By the time we arrived at the accommodation I had already started making friends and settling in. I made friends quickly with the other girls in my room, and during the induction made other friends too. Going in, I was worried about making friends, but everyone was in the same boat and it was a great environment. In the end, I made some good close friends that I still speak to now.

My volunteering days involved beach patrols, hatchery guarding and beach cleaning; we looked out for any turtles hatching on the beach and in the hatchery during the evenings, and every morning made sure the beach had been cleared of any litter. We then made eco bricks with anything we collected.

In our free time, we enjoyed sitting on the beach each afternoon before dinner, and going into the local town Hikkaduwa which was only a 10 minute tuk tuk ride away. There was also various sports and different activities organised every week , such as kayaking and karaoke.

The Maldives trip was a highlight of my trip, I swam with sharks, snorkelled with turtles and string rays and enjoyed time in the hotel.

My favourite moments were watching the turtles being released in the evenings and spending time all together in the evenings."

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ "TMR made the process leading up to the trip so smooth and I would recommend them to anyone looking for an experience similar to mine.

In August I volunteered on the South Africa Amakhala Big 5 Conservation. I chose this programme out of the many volunteer programmes TMR have to offer because it offers the chance to work in both animal conservation and in the local community.

I joined the South Africa group on Facebook around 5 months prior to departure. The page consists of many people who had already volunteered on this programme offering tips and things to remember to pack which was so helpful! I was also able to chat to others volunteering at the same time as me which was great.

Whilst waiting in arrivals at Port Elizabeth airport, I noticed a girl who I had spoke with on the page. We made friends instantly and still chat every week despite living on opposite sides of the UK. We were greeted by our driver and off we went with four others, to the volunteer house which was around an hour from the airport, in Paterson.

My favourite part of the experience was when we got to camp on the reserve. This was during the super moon when the risk of Rhino poaching was at its highest. We learnt so much about the Rhinos, the anti-poaching unit, and even managed to spot a calf. During our time camping we had a traditional braai, we went on a night drive and saw a porky pine family which is really rare, and we went on a guided bush walk where we learnt about animal tracking.

I had the best experience on the Amakhala game reserve and would love to return in the future. TMR made the process leading up to the trip so smooth and I would recommend them to anyone looking for an experience similar to mine."

Exciting news from Zimbabwe as the local team have welcomed a new baby White rhino! ๐Ÿฆ
A few days before Christmas, one the White Rhinos at the sanctuary, Ella, gave birth to a baby boy, who the team have named Madaya. The arrival of Madaya brings the total number of rhinos at the conservancy to an incredible 24!

Ella, along with her two older female calves and an adult male White rhino, Bear, was rescued from a poaching incident and relocated from another conservancy in Zimbabwe in August 2023. Their arrival has been a valuable addition to the White rhino population, playing a key role in boosting genetic diversity both within the conservancy and across Zimbabwe.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ "My names Erika and I travelled to South Africa to volunteer in Cape Town for 3 weeks...it was the best experience of my life, I am itching to go back!

The team were absolutely fantastic at communicating with me and my family over any questions. I caught my flight and when I landed followed the signs to the exit. Upon exit, I got lost and ended up calling one of the managers Kevin to help me and he did so quickly! I was very frightened but the team were amazing and calming me down and telling me where to go.

When I first arrived in the transport to the hostel, the views were just stunning, I could not take it in how beautiful Cape Town was. An African Los Angeles. I met the manger of the hostel and he became my South African dad and helped me form loads of friendships.

On the programme we started at 8:30 and finished at 12:30 Monday to Friday. It would start by helping feeding the children, playing with toys, reading, and then learning with their teachers. There was so much free time in the afternoons, evenings and weekends.

I did everything I could possibly do in Cape Town and recommend them all! I went shark swimming, elephant walking, safari swim, bungy jump, wine tasting, rugby watching, kayaking, surfing, karaoke and more. Thankfully, most of these activities I got to share with all my amazing friends in the hostel. There were up to 20 of us all from different countries and it was so insightful to learn new cultures and languages.

My favourite memory out in Cape Town was celebrating my 21st birthday. The team surprised me with a birthday party, cake, presents and we went to beer pong, karaoke and a trip to camps bay beach.

I cannot wait for the opportunity to go again and cannot thank The Mighty Roar enough!"

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฆ "It was massive step out of my comfort zone to do this by myself but it has made me grow as a person and I would 100% return!

In September I went to the Wildlife sanctuary and reserve in Namibia. Iโ€™ve struggled with anxiety quite badly for the past few years, so this was massive step out of my comfort zone.

TMR were so helpful throughout the whole process, and Iโ€™d definitely book with them again, I scheduled a zoom call to ask more questions and they were more than happy to help me. When I first arrived in Namibia I got picked up from the airport and arrived at the sanctuary, there were baboons, meerkats, polecats and more on the sanctuary as soon as you arrive which made it an amazing warm welcome.

My two favourite activities I did throughout my time on the programme was the baboon walk, theyโ€™d jump on you and sit on your shoulders or on your hips. I also loved rhino rangers which is where you spend a night on the reserve in a tent and drive around to track rhinos, elephants etc and itโ€™s so surreal when you see the animals so close to you! There were three female lions 20 metres away from us!

Some of the other activities include cleaning the animalโ€™s enclosures out, feeding carnivores, feeding the baboons, cheetah walk and so many more fun activities!

On a Saturday the staff would organise a fun activity for everyone to take part in, or you could go to bush camp and chill out by the swimming pool and have lunch! On Sundays we signed up to go to the local town and we went to a craft market and the local shopping mall!

There were about 40-50 other volunteers there which they were all lovely, I made some amazing friends out there who Iโ€™m still in contact with now, you meet so many different people from around the world. The accommodation was much better than I expected, the beds were comfy, clean, and I felt safe the whole time during my stay there.

For anyone looking to help animals, meet new people and have an adventure then I would highly recommend Namibia."

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ "I will 100% have to visit Busua again because the views, the food, and the people especially, hold a special place in my heart.

I had the privilege of spending three weeks volunteering in Ghana on the mental health/psychology programme. I met the most wonderful people during this unforgettable trip, receiving endless amounts of kindness and generosity from the local community, hospital staff, other volunteers and The Mighty Roar team in Busua. This opportunity offered me a collection of experiences and lessons that I will take with me for the rest of my life.

The pre-departure support from TMR was fantastic - communication with the team we have not even met yet were excellent as all our questions were answered almost immediately. Everything was well explained in the handbook as well and if you were unsure about anything at all, a quick WhatsApp message or even an email would get you speedy responses.

The mental health programme offers volunteers, like myself, to gain deeper insight as to how mental health is viewed in Ghana as well as how people struggling from mental health conditions are being supported. This was achieved through carrying out home-visits, shadowing mental health nurses, and directly reaching out to the wider community to educate people about mental health.

There were so many things to do in Busua, even after volunteering hours: we had the chance to learn how to surf; participate in cooking lessons and learnt how to cook Ghanaian dishes; play sports on the beach; sunbathe; explore the village; karaoke; hang out with the locals; attend mass (even if you do not believe, it is still worth visiting as the experience is unforgettable)! Not to mention the amazing weekend trips as well!

Overall, my experience in Ghana with TMR was unforgettable and I will never stop talking about how much fun I had visiting such a beautiful country with the most wonderful people.

Thank you TMR for an experience I will treasure forever."

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ "I recently travelled to Tanzania to help at the local childcare centre and it was the most life changing experience of my life. Throughout my whole time spent in Moshi, a day didnโ€™t go by where I felt unwelcome or unsafe.

The hostel feels like a home and everyone from the workers to the children to the people of Tanzania made my experience unforgettable. Going above and beyond to make your experience the best.

The childcare project was the most uplifting and inspiring environment and Iโ€™m forever grateful to have been part of it, the children are so loving and hardworking. Despite everything they all greet you every day with huge smiles on their faces.

Everyone part of the Maasai village welcomed us with open arms and appreciated everything you were doing. Me and my friend also managed to raise some money in order to buy the children a slide at the childcare and to see the smiles and enjoyment they got was the most heartwarming thing.

I cannot express how amazing my experience was in Tanzania and I will cherish everything I learnt and people I met for a life time. I met the most amazing people while out there and had the most incredible time iโ€™ll be returning in January to revisit the most beautiful community"

23/12/2024

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ"The pre departure support was amazing and I couldnโ€™t have asked for anymore. Chris was a life saver in many situations and always replied promptly. I had different experiences in the 3 different places I visited, but all of them were very smooth and very easy to navigate through. It was also perfectly explained in the pre departure pack sent via TMR.

I quite literally had the time of my life in my 9 weeks volunteering. I firstly volunteered in a game Reserve in Port Elizabeth in South Africa. I then took a short flight to Cape Town where I was a volunteer on the Teaching Programme for 4 weeks. My last leg of the trip was over to Zimbabwe where I was a volunteer at the elephant and rhino Sanctuary for 2 weeks. This trip was the most amazing, life changing experience for me and I canโ€™t stop talking about it!

During my two weeks I did a wide range of activities, my favourite being the time we spent with the elephants and the rhinos. The back story behind the sanctuary is truly inspiring and the people there really make the place a home. I also visited the Numwa Womanโ€™s Centre. The ladies there make sanitary supplies for women and young girls and we spent our time with them helping them produce their materials so they can continue making their products. I also had the chance to visit the local community where we got to see the native dances.

We built rhino bomas (feeding areas) out of large rocks which involves all the volunteers as well as cutting down dropper trees to fix the boundary fences. It is a very physical programme, but it makes it so worth it when you get to see the result of your work. In between the physical elements to the programme, we also had down time where we got to feed the elephants, rhinos and giraffes. The highlight was definitely the day you get to have breakfast with the elephants. Itโ€™s such a surreal experience that you genuinely canโ€™t believe youโ€™re living in.

The accommodation is to die for. Itโ€™s absolutely gorgeous. Itโ€™s so clean and looked after and the food is some of the best I've ever had.

Thinking back, what I remember the most is the experience I had with the elephants. It was a once in a lifetime experience which I will never ever forget and I couldnโ€™t recommend it enough booking through TMR."

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ "After graduating uni, my friend and I decided to spend a month teaching English in Bali โ€“ and I am so glad we went with The Mighty Roar. I was naturally a little apprehensive, but The Mighty Roar team was fantastic. Prior to departure, my friend and I booked onto multiple zoom calls, fired off every question we could think of, and received clear, informed answers to all of them. It really helped put me at ease that the team was always at hand, and always very well-organised.

The helpfulness and friendliness of the local team was consistently exceptional throughout the programme; they always went out of their way to ensure volunteers were well cared for and had the best experience.

It was really nice that every volunteer was assigned their own class, so you got to know and bond with your students. I honestly enjoyed the volunteering so much more than I expected, as the staff and students were touchingly appreciative of the volunteers, and it was a fun challenge coming up with and delivering creative lessons.

Outside of volunteering, I loved the evenings spent with the other volunteers. These evenings gave us a lot of time to make friends with the other volunteers (as well as get in some all-important dancing and cheap drinks!)

I also adored the Exploring Bali trip which The Mighty Roar organised, and couldnโ€™t recommend it more highly. Some of my other highlights were undoubtedly travelling in and around Bali, so use your long weekends to cram in as much as you can!

So, if youโ€™re thinking about doing the teaching volunteering programme in Bali with The Mighty Roar, you should absolutely take the plunge โ€“ even if it seems out of your comfort zone. It is one of the best things Iโ€™ve ever done, and has really given me the travel bug!"
