Superb amount of flowers on this native common ivy (Hedera helix).
On a cold November day last week in County Durham, it was alive with hoverflies and other insects feeding on its much needed autumnal nectar.

A busy week working away near Barnard Castle, then calling in to see some fantastic veteran parkland trees in a great garden ready to be awoken from it's slumber in County Durham, before seeing the Trachycarpus fortunei beginning to flower in the garden at Otterburn.

One of my all time favourites of Autumn, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, planted earlier this year in a clients garden.
With it's fantastic scent of burnt sugar filling the air and reaching 30 to 40 metres in its native Japan and China, it's a true gem.

It's amazing what a difference a good mulch does to the garden after the recent snow, helping to lock in that moisture for the year ahead. It also brings out the colours on these Galanthus 'Sam Arnott' and Helleborus argutifolius. And a wayward Iris foetidissima!

The Northumbrian Head Gardener, Adam Stenhouse

With over 20 years experience of professional gardening and garden management with The National Trust, English Heritage and private estates The Northumbrian Head Gardener, Adam Stenhouse, is available for your garden or estate in 2019.

A wide range of work can be undertaken for gardens of all sizes and requirements. Perhaps you have little knowledge or interest in gardening but would still like your garden to look its best throughout the year, whether it be basic grasscutting and regular maintenance, or one off tasks such as hedgecutting, a small tree removed or tidying up once summer is over.

Maybe you have a more in depth garden, with more unusual plant species, vegetables, fruit or woodland, but find the work too much or would like specialist advice on how it can be managed appropriately. The Northumbrian Head Gardener can use his skills, knowledge and practical experience to ensure your garden is maintained and cared for to the highest standards he has always worked to.

Work which can be undertaken includes: Bespoke garden maintenance and management, garden and plant advice, grasscutting and lawn maintenance, hedgecutting, topiary and hedge regeneration, garden tidy ups, border and plant regeneration, small tree removal and pruning, garden and woodland development, log cutting, vegetable and fruit growing, plant propagation, watering and garden care whilst you are on holiday, plant collection management, greenhouse and conservatory management, pest control (moles, rabbits, rats, mice, grey squirrels, caterpillars, aphids etc), meadow garden management and much more!
