Entries are now open for the 33rd Allendale Challenge that will take place on Saturday 6th April 2024. Entry fees stay the same as last year, which is officially the only thing that has not gone up in price! Enter before Sunday 19th November to get the early bird entry fee.

Here's something a little bit different for a - an entry from the 30 Day Map Challenge, an annual challenge organised and participated in by cartography experts from OS and beyond.

"Mountain Rescue - Whatever the Weather" was created by Hannah Wright, a Technical Relationship Consultant at Ordnance Survey.

This data visualisation explores callouts attended to by Mountain Rescue England and Wales teams within the Lake District National Park between January 2019 and July 2023.

It is designed to highlight the extraordinary work of the volunteer Mountain Rescue teams who are on call 24/7, 365 days of the year and go out to help, no questions asked, whatever the weather.

The data visualisation uses OS Open Zoomstack in night style and was created in QGIS and finished in Adobe Illustrator.

Tomorrow is the final Northumberland Six Peaks Challenge of the year and we would like to wish our participants from Tesco Bank the best of luck.

Eight members of the Tesco Underwriting Claims leadership team will be raising money in support of our incredible charity partner, the Trussell Trust. The team have already raised over £2,500, but there's still time to show some support! Find out more on their JustGiving page.

When asked why they chose to support Trussell Trust, here's what they had to say:

"The work that the Trussell Trust do has never been more important. Across the country, their annual figures from 2022 show that almost three million food parcels were given out – more than ever before - over one million of those were provided for children.

There's an increasing number of people struggling to afford the essentials, with more than 760,000 people using a food bank in the Trussell Trust network for the first time – a 38% increase compared to the same period last year."

Incredibly sad news this morning as Northumberland National Park has confirmed that the famous tree at Sycamore Gap has come down over night. They have reason to believe it was deliberately felled.

They are working with the relevant agencies and partners with an interest in this iconic North East landmark and will issue more details once they are known.

Sycamore Gap was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016 in the Woodland Trust’s awards and is much-loved by people from across the world. Northumberland National Park Authority has asked the public not to visit the site at this time whilst they work with partners to identify what has happened and to make the site safe.
