We believe in protecting Scotland’s wild places for generations to come, and we’re delighted to announce our support for SCOTLAND: The Big Picture. Their Riverwood initiative works nationwide to restore native woodland along Scotland’s rivers, protecting and enhancing these fragile ecosystems.

Atlantic salmon once thrived in Scotland’s cool, shaded rivers. Centuries of deforestation and rising water temperatures now threaten their survival. Through our Wilderness Conservation & Community Fund (WCCF), we’re helping to plant native trees, like aspen and willow, along these waterways. The trees provide shelter, food, and a healthier future for the abundant wildlife that calls these rivers home.

The WCCF is only possibly because of our travellers. Every trip with us helps fund essential conservation projects like this one.

Thank you to SCOTLAND: The Big Picture for these beautiful photos.

Nothing signals the arrival of spring in Scotland quite like the sight of newborn lambs. As they take their first wobbly steps, the landscape slowly awakens, days grow longer and the promise of warmer weather fills the air.

Across the hills and fields, these little signs of life remind us that a new season is beginning. 🌿

What’s your favourite sign that spring is on its way?

The West Highland Way is legendary for a reason. Covering 154 km/96 miles from Milngavie, outside Glasgow, to Fort William, the trail winds around rugged mountains, peaceful lochs and ancient glens. Scotland’s first long distance trail continues to offer a spectacular walking experience 45 years after it officially opened.

Our trips make this adventure seamless. Led by expert guides, staying in cosy accommodations, and with luggage transfers taken care of, you can focus on the beauty around you, not the logistics.

Scotland is bursting with life, from charming highland cows and the infamous midge to birds of prey circling high overhead.

But you might be surprised to discover some of the wildlife you might see in Scotland:
🦈 While basking sharks might look imposing, these gentle giants glide through the waves, feeding on plankton.
🦎 Did you know Scotland has lizards? These small sun-seekers can be found basking on warm rocks in summer.
🌊 Colourful puffins return to Scottish cliffs each summer, their bright beaks standing out against the rugged coastline.
🦦 Often spotted in the quiet lochs and coastal edges, otters are playful and shy.

Which of these Scottish creatures surprised you the most?

Saturday, February 1st was Imbolc.

Celebrated in Gaelic culture, this ancient festival marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. On this day, winter ends, and spring begins.

In Ireland, February 1st is St Brigid’s Day, honouring one of the country’s patron saints. Here in Scotland, we have Bride, the Goddess of Spring.

And sure enough, snowdrops have already begun to break through the frozen ground, confirming the changing seasons.

Today is the Lunar New Year. Across several Asian cultures, this new lunar month welcomes the Year of the Snake.

Inspired by this celebration, we wanted to spotlight Scotland’s only native snake, the adder.

Grey or reddish-brown in colour, these small snakes are perfectly camouflaged in the woods and moors they call home. Preferring to avoid human contact, they are currently hibernating. Adders will emerge in March to bask under a warm rock or log.

Although the adder is Scotland’s only venomous reptile, they are generally harmless to most humans and prefer to stay hidden. Spotting one in the wild is relatively rare and is a treat for wildlife lovers - from a safe distance!

The geology of the Outer Hebrides is a story billions of years in the making. From volcanic cliffs to ancient mountains, our planet has taken its time crafting the natural beauty surrounding us.

Perhaps one of the best ways to experience the fascinating geology of Scotland’s far-flung Western Isles is by sea kayak, where you can experience a rare view of these spectacular features.

Find out more about the story that shaped the Outer Hebrides in our newest blog: https://www.wildernessscotland.com/blog/geology-outer-hebrides/

Tonight, we will raise a glass for Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. January 25th is an annual event in the Scottish calendar to celebrate the words and wit of this 18th century Scot.

But Burns’ Night is about more than his poetry. It is a night of connection - joining with friends and loved ones under the blanket of a starry winter sky to share stories, laughter and, of course, haggis.

Wherever you are this January 25th, join us as we raise a dram to friendships old and new, memories made, and Robert Burns’ legacy.
