As summer draws to a close here in Scotland, so do the vibrant blooms of bonny heather. The last of these iconic purple flowers are fading on the moors, a final flourish before the jewel reds and warm browns of the remainder of the year take hold.

There is fleeting beauty in these quiet moments, as one season gives way to another.

We are beyond proud to celebrate the incredible achievement of former Wilderness Scotland guide Lorraine McCall. In just four months, she has completed a nonstop, self-powered round of Scotland’s 231 Grahams—hiking, cycling, and travelling by boat between the peaks. She ended last week at Stac Pollaidh, pictured. Lorraine has battled and recovered from three types of cancer. Her resilience and determination have been truly inspiring to witness.

This isn’t Lorraine’s first remarkable feat. In 2005, she became the first woman to complete a round of the Munros without breaks in her journey, travelling only by foot and by kayak. A decade later, she did the same with the Corbetts. Lorraine’s courage, determination, and love for Scotland’s wild places continue to inspire us all.

Congratulations, Lorraine, on this landmark achievement.

Scotland’s wildlife, known as the ‘Big Five’, are true icons of these wild landscapes. Can you identify all five?

🐿️ Have you ever spotted a red squirrel darting through ancient forests? These acrobats are a joy to watch as they gather seeds and nuts for winter.
🦦 Look out for the playful otter gliding through the water along the rugged coastline and in sheltered lochs, especially on the west coast.
🦭 Seals basking on rocky shores are always a treat, but nothing beats the thrill of watching them slip into the sea with a graceful splash.
🦅 High in the skies, the golden eagle soars over quiet glens and rocky islands, its wingspan commanding respect.
🦌 Finally, there is the red deer, Britain’s largest land mammal. In autumn, their calls echo across the moorland, an unmistakable sound.

Have you encountered any of these magnificent animals in the wild?

06/08/2024

The deep and mysterious Loch Ness holds the largest volume of fresh water in Great Britain, making it the perfect setting for tales of legendary creatures such as Nessie.

The first written mention of a monster dates to the 7th century, recounting how St. Columba bravely faced a beast in the River Ness a century earlier.

Over the centuries, sporadic sightings have kept the legend alive, each adding a new layer of intrigue and wonder to the story of Nessie. Then, in 1933, a local newspaper reported a local couple’s sighting of the monster. And the famous 1934 photograph, later revealed to be a hoax, nonetheless cemented Nessie’s place in popular culture.

From the 1960s onward, sonar explorations have delved into the loch’s depths, fueling both scientific inquiry and the imagination of Nessie enthusiasts worldwide. However, she is yet to be found.

What do you think? Is the Loch Ness Monster fact or fiction?

Each of our small group road cycling tours enjoys the company and leadership of two expert guides. We know how much of a difference this makes on the road, but don’t just take our word for it. Here is a review of our recent Five Countries Tour:

“Their [the guides’] support on the ride was always welcomed, be it van support for our breaks or encouragement on the ride. Their operation was clockwork, from the morning debrief, the ride support and hotel transfers. These two superb gentlemen provided us with as much info as they could for the day’s ride, but also facts about the countries we were visiting... They were able, in such a short period of time, to make us feel special as if we were part of their family.”

And with over 500 five star reviews for our road cycling tours, this is not an exception. Head to our website to hear more about what our clients say about their Wilderness holidays: https://www.wildernessscotland.com/about-us/reviews/

The Small Isles are situated off the western coast of Scotland, between Skye in the north and Coll in the south. They are part of the Inner Hebrides.

The main Small Isles consist of four islands: Canna, Eigg, Muck, and Rum. Despite their name, these islands are not particularly small compared to other Scottish islands – Scotland has nearly 800 islands, and Rum is the 13th largest.

Each island possesses distinct features and characteristics, ranging from the nesting seabirds of Canna to the intriguing geology of Eigg, where this photo was taken.
