Close call and great encounter the other day 🐍

We were getting off the water at a sunny roadside layby, when my 7 year old son said 'snake!' We had already walked across the spot a couple of times, including launching the canoe.

And there it was, a handsome - and feisty - young male adder (Vipera berus). Thankfully, none of us had stepped on it and it hung around long enough for us to get some great views. After that, we gave the spot a wide berth!

In case you didn't know, this is the only venomous snake species in Britain.

Interestingly, young snakes can be more dangerous than the older ones. This is because the adults tend to give more warning, avoid confrontations and even limit the amount of venom they use in self defense. In some cases, the youngsters haven't yet learned any of this!

I love snakes. And if our Scottish summers continue to get warmer, perhaps we will need to have adders on our radar a bit more...

When do the heather flowers come out in Scotland? 🌸

I get asked this question a lot! As it happens, people mostly ask in the spring, when the snow is disappearing and the very earliest wildflowers are opening. Folk wonder how long they will have to wait for the post-winter drab coloured hills and moors to get their famous coat of purple and pink.

Well, the answer is, you'll need to wait until July and August for the show to kick off. And that's when you might realise there's actually 3 main species of heather on show:

Ling (Calluna vulgaris) 📷 1
Cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix) 📷 2
Bell heather (Erica cinerea) 📷 3

Heather-covered hills and moors are one of the natural sights for which Scotland is world famous. It's a scarce habitat globally, supporting a very specific and rich community of plants and animals, not to mention being an important carbon sink. In fact, the vast heather moors and hills of Scotland's Flow Country are about to be certified as a UNESCO world heritage site.

But is heather moorland always an entirely natural landscape? That's a different question! 🧐

Cloudberries are ripening at this time of year...

Found throughout northern latitudes, right up into the Arctic, cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) are packed with vitamin C and are an important late summer wild food.

When ripe, they become more orange in colour and provide a pleasant fruit snack. Learn about foraging, wildlife, navigation and more on our guided day trips in the Scottish Highlands.

Big hairy beastie in the Highlands 😊

The Northern Eggar moth caterpillar ( Lasiocampa quercus ) is often seen on heather moorland at this time of year.

They can get pretty huge (finger-sized! ) and are covered in protective irritating hairs. But, if you are a cuckoo, they seem to make rather good eating! These caterpillars eventually metamorphose into a beautiful, two-tone reddish brown moth.

Interestingly, this photo from up on Ben Klibreck illustrates 2 other advantages of that long, hairy covering: 1) insulation in cold weather, and 2) protection from rain.

Beautiful places to reflect on big issues...

The 'Lily Loch' is a gorgeous freshwater loch on the centuries-old Rothiemurchus Estate in the Cairngorms National Park.

It's also one site for the recent reintroduction of beavers. Here, with students from the University of Georgia, we discussed the pros and cons of this project, and the dual role our national parks play in protecting both wildlife and human communities.

Explore some of Scotland's last remaining ancient pine forest 🌲

Martin, Patrick and Barbara joined me in Abernethy forest a while back, to learn about the conservation of the wonderful species there. This was a return visit for Patrick, who has undertaken some pretty full-on journeys of his own.

Great to spend time with people who appreciate wild places 😊

The Scottish mountains are spectacular, but can be pretty full-on ⛰️

Ida discovered that Scottish 'Munros' can be more about snow, fog and bearings, than breathtaking vistas...

“My day out on the plateau with Malcolm was a magical experience, despite the very foggy conditions, and snow and ice on most of the route.

"At times it felt like we were on a proper arctic expedition. I felt in good hands the whole time and even got a navigation crash course - with an extremely knowledgeable teacher!

"He pointed out little details about the landscape, and plant and animal life all throughout the route. Really couldn’t have asked for a better first Munro!"

That was back in May - just a few snow patches left now!

"Bout time to try out the new jumps at Grantown Bike Park 🚲

This great wee bike park in the Cairngorms has a wide range of circuits and trails, all in a small area of gorgeous forest.

The jumps area has just been upgraded and, in all honesty, it's light years better than what was there before 👌 Nice, fast, clean lines and modern shapes to suit today's bikes.

Plenty to keep you entertained and learning on a sunny day.

The beavers are coming 🦫

Scotland is home to a small, but growing population of beavers. Law changes and reintroductions mean that we will start to see more and more signs of beaver activity in our countryside.

Sure, they aren't welcomed everywhere, and in some places they will have to be removed, or trees protected.

But, their presence is going to mean a richer, healthier, more flood-resistant landscape. More wetlands, more animal and plant species and more carbon stored.

Looking forward to it 🙂

Beautiful crazy shapes in the ice on Ben Macdui ❄️

This is the summit of Ben Macdui a couple of days ago! At 1309m (4293ft) it's definitely a Munro and Britain's second highest mountain (by only 35m). The marker cairn here was erected in 1925 by the Cairngorm Club of Aberdeen.

It was covered in a wonderful doughnut-shaped rime ice formation. I think this was caused by the circular shape of the cairn, combined with the cold, damp, very strong northwest winds recently (right of picture).

In 1859, Queen Victoria described it as 'sublime and solemn... wild, so solitary'.

A wonderful place to walk out to, requiring 20km worth of legwork, planning and good navigation, in a pretty inhospitable environment 🥶

Frequent flyer 🛩️

Been really enjoying working on jumps this spring. There's a few handy wee bike parks and dirt jumps dotted around the strath. These make great opportunities for practising timing, body position and pressure control.

Natural trails are cool, but so are built features. The strength of the first is their unpredictability. The strength of the second is their predictability. Built trails and dirt jumps remove tree roots, slippy corners and ruts from the equation, allowing you to focus on what's needed to get airborne.

Great to get out with this gang of Belgian birders the other day 🤓

With a wet and windy forecast, heavy-duty optics and a sense of adventure, we visited mountain, moorland and forest sites and ticked off a good range of species. ✅

Highlights included:
Black-throated diver (in breeding plumage)
Female Scottish-type crossbill (very close)
Red deer
Dipper
Red grouse (male and female, with chicks)
Twinflower

Birding in the Highlands sometimes involves a lot of effort, for relatively few bird species (37 on this trip) . Thankfully, these guys accepted the challenges and we enjoyed exploring some wild places and finding great species together.

Plus, one of the joys, for me, of working with customers from abroad is the language differences. I never expected to meet anyone who thought that British bird names actually made more sense than their own! 😂

Just a shame they didn't bring any chocolate 🍫

Pollen, pollen everywhere 🌲🌼

During the last few weeks, we have seen what looks like puddles and tides of custard in our forests! This is actually entirely natural - the release of massive quantities of pollen from the pine trees.

In fact, it's so dense that sometimes, with a strong wind, you could see giant puffs of yellow 'smoke' coming off the Scots pines.

Looks like there will be a bumper crop of Pine cones this year. This bodes well for birds such as crossbills, which specialise on extracting the tiny seeds from between the pinecone scales.

Not so great for hay-fever sufferers, though 😬

So good to have easily-accessible progressive dirt jumps! This means you can get loads of reps in a relatively short space of time, with not much effort.

In turn, this helps hone your technique and get really comfortable with new skills.

Beautiful skies last night 🤩

It was super-awesome standing in the warm, calm night at the coast, watching faint green curtains of light, listening to gentle waves and the distant calls of grey seals.

On the way home in the wee (not-so-small) hours, the journey was punctuated by roding woodcock, drumming snipe and a floating barn owl.

This was a relatively rare storm-level aurora, all triggered by one of the strongest CMEs for 20 years! Plus, we are in the maximum period in the sun's approx 11-year solar cycle ☀️ To top it off, we have relatively clear skies and a waxing crescent moon - so not too bright.

Get in touch for guided night-time journeys 🔦 Aurora not guaranteed, but right now are some of the best opportunities for years!

Busy time of year for sheep farmers 🐑 (WARNING: graphic content pic 2)

Lambing is now mostly concluded for this year in the Cairngorms. A super important period filled with joy, hard work, stress and sadness too.

Many lambs will be getting to know their surroundings under the care of their watchful mothers.

For some, on the other hand, things will be different. Lambs become orphaned when their mothers die, or become sick, stressed or uninterested.

Others won't make it for various reasons, with local crows constantly ready to harass and predate them.

However you're enjoying the countryside at the moment, look out for sheep with lambs. Avoid panicking them, keep dogs well under control/away and leave gates as you find them.

One of the things that makes the Cairngorms a special place...🦃

If you've never heard of capercaillie, then know that these are one of the rarest breeding birds in Britain, almost all of which are found right here in the Cairngorms National Park.

These gigantic wild forest turkeys are spectacular, but also on the brink of extinction here.

It's human nature to want to see things that are rare and unusual. But we forget that capercaillie have very finely tuned senses and hide well.

Whatever we think of our camouflage, fieldcraft or optics, our presence at certain times and places is almost guaranteed to disturb them...WHETHER WE SEE THEM OR NOT.

And although you might think you're an expert, what about the next dozen people who try and copy/follow you?

For a robust, healthy wildlife population, disturbance is less likely to be a problem (although it may still be poor practice).

But Britain's capercaillie are NOT that (even/especially here in their core range). Any disturbance is likely to have a large, disproportionately bad impact on their numbers and health.

Please heed local advice and give capercaillie space. Hopefully they will be easier to find if their numbers recover.

For these reasons, Arc Guiding is pleased to support the campaign again this year:

It's not all about the views 😁

Great day yesterday heading out to Ben Macdui, Britain's second highest mountain ⛰️ Despite poor vis, we enjoyed great chats and got to practise our nav.

Hard to find wildlife in these conditions, so quick ID is essential:
'Just saw a bird! '
'Cool, what colour was it?'
'Er... bird coloured?' 🤣

Thanks for your company and a proper 17km adventure on the plateau ✅

Solve those flats, burps, twisted valves and blocked cores with juicy ni***es! ✅

OK, so it's really well beyond time that I replaced my valve cores, which were getting clogged, worn and twisted. Apart from the hassle of repeatedly inflating the tyres (which needed new sealant), this avoids the added risk of having to deal with a broken valve core somewhere remote. Valve maintenance is the flip side of having super-good tubeless grip and reliability.

Plus these
Juicy Ni***es have a natty integrated core remover, which should make replacements and sealant topups a bit easier 🙂

Longer, sunny days means dry dirt! 🚴🏽‍♂️

Easing back into jumps today on one of our local jump parks (shoutout to for maintaining it 🙂).

If, like me, your last rides were autumn trail-type rides, you might need to do some tinkering before committing to summer jump lines:
*swap your pedals
*check tyre pressures and valve cores
*check suspension setup (esp: damping/rebound)
*brake pressures
*l**e

Enjoy 🚴🏽‍♂️

Snow's going fast, but what's left might be worth the effort 😉

It's worth it if you don't mind the long haul up maybe with a bike). But what you get is relatively low avalanche hazard, steep lines, long daylight and plenty of stoke 😊

This is actually a great time of year to hit lines you wouldn't/couldn't all season due to unstable snow. True, there's now the risk of cornice collapse or rock fall, so keep the radar switched on...

Not a place for novice tourers, but a great opportunity for experienced backcountry skiers to challenge themselves on something steeper.

That's the question I posed to a small group of young people last week. Working with , we introduced them to a range of exciting projects, people and experiences connected with restoring wild habitats in the Cairngorms.

Some really transformative moments, for example

* restoring native trees and woodland
* exploring the wild Glen Feshie and beaver habitat
(one lad drank straight out of a mountain stream for the first time👍)

And to cap it off, being fed amazing locally foraged food by the wonderful team at .

More Wild Ski Adventure yesterday 🏔️

Led my team out to the El Alamein Refuge yesterday. This historic wee stone hut was built partly to commemorate the many soldiers from Highland regiments who served and died in Egypt during World War 2. El Alamein was one of the first early, crucial Allied victories during the war. A beautiful, peaceful location overlooking Strath Nethy.

And the skiing? Wild, remote, tundra-like skinning on the plateau. Followed by desperate turns between rocks in sticky porridge🌞 🔥🌡️

Great day with great people though. And we made up for it with fast laps on hero snow on piste 😎

'Take' em on an adventure' was the brief and that's exactly my team got. Fast turns, windslab, Scottish pow, big views, sunshine, broken kit, long ascents and wild descents. Day 1 of the Wild Ski weekend delivered easily one of the best days of the season yesterday 😎

Scottish ski touring payback day 🙂

Yesterday was one of those days that, for me, proves Scottish ski touring is sometimes more about quality than quantity! My clients and I had an absolute blast, with untouched spring snow, great views, low avvy hazard, light winds and freshies 👍 Certainly helped by a full-area ticket to beef up skills and confidence before heading over the back.

Shoutout to for the top effort making the pistes work 📣

Sharing the skills and nature of wild places...

Based in the Cairngorms National Park, I guide and instruct throughout the Scottish Highlands and Islands and further afield. I work with a number of excellent outdoor providers and also run my own company Arc Guiding, which provides a wide range of adventure sports and guided wildlife trips throughout the year.
