One of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding is choosing your celebrant! You might meet with a few celebrants before deciding to see who feels like the right fit for you. With that in mind we’ve put together a handy guide with some questions to ask a wedding celebrant.

The key questions!

🖋️ 📖 Can you legally marry us?

This is because not all celebrants can legally marry you in Scotland. Rest assured, Humanist Society Scotland celebrants are permanently authorised to legally marry you so no matter how far in the future your wedding date is, nothing will change.

🚨 What would happen if you are not available on the day of the ceremony? Would you be able to provide a replacement celebrant to cover?

Humanist Society Scotland has a backup cover procedure in place. This is our ceremony promise to you, and means that in the unlikely event of an emergency, we will find you a replacement celebrant, from our network of over 100 celebrants across Scotland. Plus, all our celebrants are covered by public liability insurance.

Other important questions to ask:

- What training have you had?
- What experience do you have?
- How would you describe your style of delivery?
- Are we able to see you in action?
- Do you have any reviews?
- What is the total cost? (make sure this includes the base fee, travel & any other expenses, and membership fees)

Read the article on our website (link in comments 👇) to get our full list of questions. You can also check out our ceremonies blog which has loaads more guidance to keep you right on your wedding planning journey! 📝 🥰

Last wedding of the year. The lovely Lindsey and Kevin and their gorgeous and long awaited wee Jessica who almost stole the show, but not quite, as mum looked amazing. A great way to finish the year at the fabulous Piersland House Hotel, Troon.

Lots of happy 'greetin' on Saturday for the marriage of Laura and Michael at the Riverside Lodge Hotel in Irvine. Neither were looking for a relationship till they met and soon realised how they felt. They do seem to be made for each other. Pictured here with Laura's youngest Leyton. Wishing them all the very best.

OK so who looks best?😅 Clearly Ellie and Sean whom I was delighted to marry on Thursday 12th on a gorgeous sunny day at Enterkine House Hotel. I had a lovely assistant - Ellie's uncle Doug in the photo with me. He had travelled all the way from Florida and delivered and put his own spin on their story as a couple, as well as some encouraging words at the end of ceremony. A wee bit of respite for me for once. Good luck Mr and Mrs Bennie!

Congratulations to the amazing Daisey and Kieran. Such a lovely story of how they met at school and finally ended up getting married to each other. They have a great sense of humour and their love for each other just shines through. Even I had a wee quivering bottom lip as Daisey came up the aisle at the in Ayr.

Guess where the lovely Jenny and Jevon got married on Thursday? They were such a pleasure to work with. Stunning Brig o' Doon House Hotel on the outskirts of my home town of 'auld Ayr whom ne'er a toon surpasses for honest men and bonnie lasses'. Only saying!

And wedding number three was for the smashing Kerry and Neil who tied the knot yesterday at Riverside Lodge Hotel in Irvine. Not sure where Neil disappeared to, but doesn't glam granny Kerry look amazing. We had lots of laughs preparing for, and, of course, during their very personal and relaxed ceremony!

Wedding number two this week was for tiny Caitlyn and tall Thomas at GreenValley GolfAcademy just outside Stranraer. I know how hard they have worked in bringing up their family and to save for this wedding. I wish them all the best for the future.

Great to see so many people in uniform, including groom Andrew who is an RAF Officer! Saturday was a very hot day in Ayr for his marriage to stunning vet Alyson. They were a joy to work with. Had a panic today when we briefly thought their legal paperwork had gone missing, but it turned up stuck at the back of the safe, at the, as always, fab Brig o' Doon House Hotel where it had been, and should have been, all along! Phew! They can now relax and enjoy their honeymoon!!!

So, last Saturday, Daniel and Elizabeth finally tied the knot. It was a long distance relationship for a couple of years, with Daniel travelling between Yorkshire and Ayr to be with Elizabeth every weekend. They have had various challenges along the way, not least with their health, but they finally became Mr and Mrs Anderson-McIntyre on 31 August at the house hotel in Ayr.
It was such a privilege to help them put together and then deliver their ceremony, with some of the most heartfelt and personal vows. Wishing them so much happiness together.

LOVE WEDDINGS

It is such pleasure to work with couples, all of whom are different, and want their ceremony to be special, meaningful and a genuine reflection of who they are and what their hopes and wishes are for their future. These have taken place at venues from beaches and cottages to castles and five star hotels, and every one has been a pleasure and a privilege to undertake.

I would describe my style as informal and relaxed. I want every couple and their guests to have a very happy and memorable experience of the ceremony, one that is full of love and laughter and which sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Although based in Ayr, home of ‘honest men and bonnie lasses’ I am happy to cover weddings anywhere in Ayrshire and the south west, Glasgow and the central belt, Arran, Kintyre and beyond. I am now into my fifth year of being a wedding celebrant and have loved every single ceremony I have taken. What a wonderful job I have!!!!
