FANCY A WEEKEND WALK? Our lovely Bakewell via Ashford-in-the-Water circular walk (5.7 miles) takes you along the banks of the River Wye from the ancient market town of Bakewell into the picture-perfect village of Ashford-in-the-Water. From there the route heads up through pastureland onto the Monsal Trail, before returning on quiet field paths to Bakewell. There are stiles and squeeze stiles, although no terribly steep ascents or descents. Bakewell has a great number of cafes, restaurants, pubs and sandwich shops - not to mention stockists of Bakewell Pudding! - for refreshments before or after your walk. The village of Ashford-in-the-Water is your halfway point and is also well served with a pub and a tea room, as well as the most delightful riverbank as a picnic venue. There is plenty of public car parking available in Bakewell (fees apply).

IMPORTANT NOTE! Please treat this beautiful landscape with the respect it deserves. Take all your litter home with you, keep dogs on leads when walking through livestock, and remember that barbecues are not permitted in any part of the Peak District National Park.

Imagine crossing these stepping stones in the Peak District 🥾🌿

Sheltered beneath the Monsal Trail, the peaceful nature reserve of Chee Dale is where the River Wye meanders through a deep limestone gorge ⛰️

There are two sets of stepping stones providing access through the dale, and plenty of photo opportunities! 👣

In heavy rain, the stepping stones are often submerged in water, so plan this walk for when the weather has been dry ☺️

The stunning limestone gorge of Winnats Pass lies at the western end of the Hope Valley in the Peak District, a craggy, jagged fissure in the earth. It's hard to imagine that this land was once underneath a warm, tropical sea - until you look closely at the rocks and see the fossils of the marine plants and animals that lived here 350 million years ago. Happily you can now explore it without having to swim, which the sheep are very relieved about - everyone knows that wool shrinks in warm water…. - Suzanne
