FANCY A WEEKEND WALK? Our lovely Bakewell via Ashford-in-the-Water circular walk (5.7 miles) takes you along the banks of the River Wye from the ancient market town of Bakewell into the picture-perfect village of Ashford-in-the-Water. From there the route heads up through pastureland onto the Monsal Trail, before returning on quiet field paths to Bakewell. There are stiles and squeeze stiles, although no terribly steep ascents or descents. Bakewell has a great number of cafes, restaurants, pubs and sandwich shops - not to mention stockists of Bakewell Pudding! - for refreshments before or after your walk. The village of Ashford-in-the-Water is your halfway point and is also well served with a pub and a tea room, as well as the most delightful riverbank as a picnic venue. There is plenty of public car parking available in Bakewell (fees apply).

IMPORTANT NOTE! Please treat this beautiful landscape with the respect it deserves. Take all your litter home with you, keep dogs on leads when walking through livestock, and remember that barbecues are not permitted in any part of the Peak District National Park.

Traffic jam at Winnats Pass in the Peak District 🐑🐑🐑

Did you know, the name ‘Winnats’ comes from ‘Windy Gates’ because this is one of the windier entrances into Castleton and the beautiful Hope Valley! 💨

This stunning limestone valley was once under a tropical sea, and the landscape is full of fossils of sea creatures that lived here over 350 million years ago 🦀

One of our favourite places….

Clear, frosty mornings, views for days, and a mighty fine gate. Could I ask for anything more?! This is the view from Bretton looking over the stretching White Peak countryside, criss-crossed with limestone walls, towards Cressbrook Dale and Wardlow Hay Cop. It's a view I've admired in many different seasons and lights, but there's always something new to spot in the landscape.

We’re delighted to say that the beautiful Haddon Hall is reopening its ancient doors again on 20 June! This fortified manor house on the edge of Bakewell is one of the most perfectly preserved historic houses in the country, with original Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan architecture, much of it unchanged since the days of Henry VIII.

This year Derbyshire residents are entitled to 30% off the entrance fee (produce proof of residency at the gate for the discount), and children under 16 always go free.

See https://www.haddonhall.co.uk/ for more information.

☀️ The gritstone edges of the Dark Peak look wonderful in the sunrise light, as you can see from this stunning shot of Stanage Edge above Hathersage.

🧗‍♀️ The magnificent edifice of Stanage Edge runs for nearly 4 miles, from Moscar Moor to Burbage. It’s a haven for wildlife. The rocks are home to shy common lizards and adders, whilst in the skies you may see endangered ring ouzels, ravens and curlews.
