Before and during D-Day, RAF “Met” sorties Bismuth and Mercer flew out of Tiree, collecting essential weather data not available any other way.
See the routes they flew in this chart.
518 Squadron flew these missions in all weather, every day or night of the year except one when the Halifax couldn’t get any grip on the ice on the runway and slid off.
Their readings led to the delay of Operation Overlord from 5th to 6th June 1944.

Unfortunately, this morning’s flight was unable to land in Tiree and with some of the distillery team on the flight, we’ll be opened even later than we had planned.

We will be serving G&Ts and continuing with bottle sales but our cocktail menu will be unavailable. Today’s tour will no longer be scheduled and we’ll be in touch with those booked to arrange an alternative.

A huge thanks to Janice MacInnes, who will be covering the shop today at very late notice! 😅
