The Causeway Coastal Route as it reaches the top of Knocksoghey just outside Ballintoy on the way to Ballycastle.

In the mid distance is the 'Rue Point' on Raghery (Rathlin Island) and beyond that the 'Mull of Kintyre', Scotland.

The parking layby you can see is used by many visitors who come to walk at Larry Bane (Carrick a Rede) or walk to Ballintoy harbour via the cliff path. It is an alternative 'free parking' location, in contrast to the extortionate, 'parking only' charge of ยฃ10 imposed by the National Trust at Carrick a Rede. If your a member, it is free.

The National Trust also shut the gate at the top of the road in the evening but you can still access the site on foot from here or from the cliff path. It used to be open all the time for public access.

Thank you for your visit

For local self - catering accommodation check out the 'Wee House' and 'Harbour View Cottage', links to both can be found on my main website www.causewaycoastalroute.com 'Stay Local' / Ballintoy.

This is an independent site with no affiliation to any statutory tourism organization, hence I can be honest about places.

This is 'Magazine Gate', one of the entrances into the old walled city, the walls of Derry are widely quoted as being amongst the finest examples of fortifications in Europe, with a width of approximately 9m they stretch for 1.5 km to encompass the old city.

There were originally four gates, two of which had draw bridges. On the wall overlooking the Bogside, an additional dry ditch was created, along this wall which has great views over the city towards St. Eugene's cathedral, sycamore trees line the walk. It is also where you can find the old church of St Augustine, often referred to as the 'wee church on the walls'.

A large collection of cannons are on display around the walls, restored to their original condition, several go back to the first fortification of the city by Henry Docwra in circa 1601.

A walk around the city walls is a must do experience if you are visiting Derry, a superb experience in my opinion and one I do whenever I visit the city.

Thank you for your visit

๐Ÿฆ‰ The Giants Causeway and Bushmills Railway leaves from just outside Bushmills Village on its 20 minute journey of 2 miles to and from the Giants Causeway, along the track bed of what used to be the Giants Causeway Tram. The diesel locomotive runs 4 times a day between 11am and 2.30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Children, in particular, love being on the train.

This is Dungiven Castle which you can get to via the Roe Valley Scenic Route that loops off and on the main Causeway Coastal Route at Limavady.

The site goes back to when the O'Cahan clan owned the land here and is where their castle once stood. The splendid building we see today dates to the1830s when Robert Ogilby expanded and rebuilt the castle in its current style.

The Ogilby family settled locally during the Plantation of Ulster and owned the castle until 1925. It is an impressive looking building when viewed from the surrounding countryside though a little hidden when you drive through the town.

It is hard to believe that when the local council eventually bought the derelict building which was in need of repair, they decided to have it demolished. Fortunately this decision was met with strong public protests which resulted in the building being saved and renovated.

A couple of interesting facts and I am sure there are many more, it was used as a billet for the US Army during World War II.

The Castle Ballroom was added and it became a well known 'Ballrooms of Romance' which you could find all over Ireland in the 50s and 60s, these wonderful venues hosted the show bands and international artists of the time. Unfortunately the Castle Ballroom burnt down in 2001.

Today the castle is home to Gaelcholรกiste Dhoire, a primary and secondary level Irish Language College, there is also a nice parkland garden to the front of the building.

Thank you for your visit.

You can find more about the Roe Valley Scenic Route on my main website: www,causewaycoastalroute.com including links to local accommodation.

๐ŸฐHED State Care Monuments are amongst the best-known historic landmarks and tourist destinations in Northern Ireland.

Bonamargy Friary was built close to the mouth of the Carey and Shesk rivers by Rory MacQuillan in 1500. The rival MacDonnell clan fought for and claimed the friary from the MacQuillans in 1588.

The cloister, gatehouse, altar and church are well preserved except for the thatch roof which once capped the structure.

There are many interesting features including the east window, a staircase and a sealed burial vault. The coffins of several Earls of Ulster and chieftain, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, lie within.
