"Corkan Island on the River Foyle"

Between Strabane & Porthall, County Donegal, Ireland

Corkan Island is a small river island on the River Foyle. This river & the old 'Strabane Canal’ alongside were once bustling waterways. Only 70 years ago these waters would have never ceased to ripple, by the amount of merchant barges & boats sailing both ways.

Times have certainly changed & moved forward by the modern advances in freight lorries, aeroplanes & internet deliveries. Nowadays calm mirrored reflections are a common sight on these silent riverbanks….. in my book this is wonderful as it’s how this river was for thousands of years prior & how it should now remain once again, the way nature intended.

‘The Sacred Heart of Errigal’

🥂 Happy New Year 2023 Folks 🕊

The 'Church of the Sacred Heart’ is one of Donegal’s if not Ireland’s most perfectly situated buildings. It was built in 1877 on top of this small hill on the shore of Dunlewey Lough. Nestled so close to the foot of Errigal Mountain that it could almost hide in its shadow.

Because of its name The Sacred Heart & its proximity to Errigal Mountain, I often refer to this stunning church as ‘Errigal’s Heart’ 💚 In my mind this makes perfect sense.....

To my dear Family, Friends & the greatly missed, I would like to wish you all a Happy New year 2023. I would also like to thank each of you for support throughout the year. It means so much to me & I look forward to bringing you more images of Ireland throughout this brand-new year ahead. Take care my friends 🕊

‘St James Church - Parish of Donagheady’

Donemana, Strabane, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland

This picturesque little church & cemetery was constructed in 1879 to house a congregation of 300 worshipers from the local parish. I love its placement as it fringes on the local Donemana village border. Idyllically seated so even today it’s not congested & surrounded by “sprung up” modern constructions around it.

Saint James Church still stands proudly on a natural open-air landscape, surrounded by lush rolling green fields & to its rear an ancient woodland likely predating the church itself. Its clean natural blend with its environment is a timeless credit to both its builders & its current custodians 🙏

🐸 ‘Leapfrogging on Mossy Humps’ 🐑

Downpatrick Head, Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland

During a recent visit to Dún Briste sea stack I was fascinated on how the grass & soil is shaped across this headland! I’ve yet seen anything quite like it elsewhere across Ireland. These lumps resemble green mossy turtle shells scattered across the ground 🐢 When walked across they are surprisingly very spongy & springy.

Whilst curiously checking out these grassy lumps, I was secretly being stalked by ‘The Guardians of Dun Briste’ 🐑 This beautiful curious sheep had snuck up on me, so I decided to capture her portrait. She then joyfully bounced off across these mossy humps, like a frog hopping across giant Lily pads in a pond 😂

Ireland can be so unusual at times but there’s always joy to be found no matter what you come across 💚

‘The Tale of Inishsirrer Island’

Inishsirrer Island, Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland

Silently resting offshore northwest Donegal can be found this small island settlement of Inishsirrer. Once a thriving fishing community, today this little island is sadly uninhabited. All that remains is this little ‘Ghost Town’ with its abandoned cottages, shops, dry stone walls and small harbour all echoing its once bustling past.

Several factors contributed to its overall abandonment. Mainly because the younger generations were either hired out to work, married off or sent further away to Scotland seeking work. The remaining elderly who lived off the land where unable to resume the hard life of fishing alone, so they re-homed on the mainland. Their well ran dry... so to speak. Unfortunately for them their little boats called ‘Curraghs’ could not carry much weight resulting in these families having to leave all their heavy possessions and furniture behind. The homes on this island were virtually left the way they were the day the last residents rowed their boats away....

One can't help but feel a strong sense of admiration towards this once hard-working community during the good times that have now long passed. Dancing across the waves could once be heard the sounds of dogs barking, chickens cooing, children laughing, fishermen singing now forgotten songs beneath squalling seagulls fighting for leftover fish discarded from the daily catch. In the evening the crackling sounds & smell of freshly lit turf fires from each cottage could be sensed from everywhere on this isle. Nowadays these are mere echoes from the past, deep silence is all that comes from Inishsirrer anymore…... I hope these tales will never be forgotten and be passed down our generations through stories, paintings & photography 📖

‘Inishmurray Island’

Offshore County Sligo, Ireland

Four miles out to sea overlooking Benbulben and the Dartry Mountain range on the mainland of Sligo, rests the Monastic 'Isle of Inishmurray' literally hidden in plain sight. An early Christian settlement was founded on this island by Saint Molaise in the 6th century. This site contains various buildings including a stone-roofed oratory, two churches, a clochán (large beehive-shaped cell) a holy well, cross slabs and countless gravestones. As you can see the remains of which are remarkably intact to this day.

The island's monastic settlement was attacked in 795 AD & again in 807 by the Vikings! Eventually the monks abandoned the island & it remained uninhabited until the 12th century. A thousand years later the island’s population peaked at just over 100 in the 1880s, but the last islanders moved on to the mainland on November 12th 1948. Thankfully most of these buildings are still standing including 15 houses & a school. 💚

‘Wild Atlantic Donkeys’

Atlantic Drive, Rosguill Peninsula, Downings, County Donegal, Ireland

Throughout the landscapes & coasts of Ireland can be found various animals such as cows, horses or sheep which have nowadays become symbolic to Irish landscape imagery. However one of my favourite animals to stumble upon at any time is the humble donkey. There’s just something so comforting when watching them, maybe it’s their long fur like hair or their big rabbit ears but I really adore meeting donkeys on my travels.

On a peaceful day along the ‘Atlantic Drive’ I got “cuteness overload” when meeting this family of 7 donkeys 😍 all posing in front of the magical ‘Tra Na Rossan’ beach. I spent ages with them and promised that next time I return, that I’ll bring them all a big bunch of carrots as a treat for being such stunning models in my photograph 📸 💚
