The usage of Drones within the National Park - Something we do on a regular basis..

Since November 2019 all drone operators must have two valid registrations in place (Flyer ID and Operator ID) before you fly a drone (or model aircraft) between 250g – 25Kg.

i. You must pass a CAA theory test to obtain a flyer ID.

ii. The person that is responsible for the drone (or model aircraft) must register to get an operator ID.

It is against the law to fly a drone without passing both the test or registration.

Remember you are responsible for flying your drone in a legal and safe manner.

Using Drones for Non-commercial Purposes
In terms of outdoor use, many organised or charitable events are using drones on a more regular basis and it is important that operators should be aware of their legal responsibilities.

Care and attention is required when operating drones in the mountains due to the high number of walkers. In terms of Yr Wyddfa, all the access routes (which are all Public Rights of Way) to and from the summit are geographically very narrow linear corridors with high numbers of walkers. The summit area in particular can become congested, especially during the summer months. More than one drone flying around within close proximity of another may give rise to serious concern in terms of public safety.

Please bear in mind that there may also be other aircraft in the area at low level such as search and rescue helicopters or those used for military training purposes. Operators and organisers should therefore think carefully when operating drones and their potential for causing serious injury and your subsequent potential liabilities.

Using Drones for Commercial Purposes
Commercial users, whether using under 25kg or over 25kg drones, should have a formal UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) qualification accredited by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and operators must have the relevant permission from the landowner.

You will also need Public Liability Insurance and Aviation Insurance Liability cover. Where necessary, evidence of these documents should be provided. Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA) kindly asks all organisers to discuss their activities with relevant Authority staff beforehand to avoid any difficulties.

Operating commercial drones on SNPA property such as the summit of Yr Wyddfa or other SNPA owned areas such as car parks will require permission and licensing. This can be arranged through the SNPA Property Section at the National Park Office in Penrhyndeudraeth.

Principle Rules for using Drones in Eryri:

The aircraft should not endanger anyone or anything.
The operator must keep the aircraft within line of sight (500m horizontally and 120m vertically.
The aircraft must not be over or within 150m of a β€˜congested area’ I.e. a residential area, any commercial or recreational areas.
The aircraft must not fly over or be within a distance of 150m from an organised open-air assembly (i.e. event).
The aircraft should not be within 50m of any vessel or structure.
The aircraft should not be within 30m of any person except during take-off and landing.
Owners and operators should have, where necessary, the relevant licensing requirements.
Operators should pay heed to any requirements under the Data Protection Act for the collection, use, dissemination and storage of any images/film.
Operators should also note that when drones are being operated in the countryside, they should not disturb other recreational users quiet enjoyment of the countryside and neither should they hinder or harass livestock, wild animals (including birds) other domestic animals or pets. Such activities may fall under other legislation and may result in prosecution.

For drone flying over National Trust properties separate consent will be required.

Access in the National Park...

Walking
At least 60% of the NP area is access land where a right exists to walk – this was granted under the Countryside & Rights of Way Act (CRoW 2000). Additionally there are almost 2400km of Public Rights of Way and 270km of bridleway. These are all shown on Ordnance Survey Explorer OL Maps Numbers 17, 18 and 23 which cover Eryri National Park on a scale of 1:25,000.

Wild camping
Most land within Eryri National Park is privately owned and has specific land uses, such as farming (mostly for sheep and cattle) or forestry and wild camping is not allowed, unless permission is specifically granted by the respective landowner or farmer, otherwise you are committing a trespass.

If you want to camp then we suggest that you book a designated campsite where you will have access to facilities. There are many campsites within the NP and the surrounding areas, including campsites with full facilities, and some which provide a more basic experience of camping.

If you do have permission from the landowner to wild-camp we ask that any camping should be done responsibly and discretely in the hills and mountains and that you should follow the Eryri Wild Camping Code as below:

Camp high and off the beaten track on open hills and fells and well away from houses and farms.
Pitch your camp later in the day and leave early to minimise your visual presence.
Stay for one night only to minimise your impact.
Leave no trace that you’ve camped.
Don’t light any fires and do not use disposable barbeques.
Great care must be taken if using gas or liquid fuel stoves. Always ensure the cooking area is free from flammable materials including vegetation.
Don’t light any fires and use a gas stove for cooking.
Toileting should be at least 30 m away from any water source or path, and waste buried at least 15cm deep and covered over. Carry paper and any sanitary items away with you.

Leave no litter; take away all rubbish and all organic food scraps with you.
Don’t pollute the area with any non-eco-friendly detergents and do not use streams, lakes or rivers for washing with soaps or other washing products. Take a small bowl and dispose of this well away from any water courses.
Move on respectively without argument if asked by a landowner to do so.
Use unobtrusive coloured tents that blend in with the scenery.

Camp with just one or two tents; no groups.
Choose your pitch carefully and avoid digging ditches, trampling plants and moving rocks and stones just to accommodate your tent.
Be quiet.

If you’re in any doubt about whether you can camp, choose another location.
Campsites.co.uk has a useful guide on the wild camping code on their website.

You may also consider using one of the 4 mountain bothies within the National Park.

Mountain Biking
Mountain biking/cycling activities are only allowed on public bridleways only and not footpaths. Kindly note that voluntary restrictions apply to certain routes on Yr Wyddfa between 1st May and 30th September where access is by cycles is not allowed between 10.00 am and 17.00 pm. This includes the Llanberis Path, Snowdon Ranger and the Rhyd Ddu path. All other routes are accessible. Cyclists should note that by law they must give way to pedestrians and horse riders at all times.

There is no statutory right of access to inland water in Wales or England without landowners’ consent and this applies to any land within the National Park.

This includes wild swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding or using any unpowered vessel.

However, there are some places within Eryri National Park where some activities are allowed. Information on where can be found on our website – the link to the page can be found in the resource list.
