Most people know of the Menai Suspension Bridge, built by Thomas Telford, but there are two bridges to Anglesey and the second one has a sad past. Originally designed by the engineer Robert Stephenson it was an unusual tubular bridge carrying the main railway line to Holyhead. Sadly it was severely damaged in 1970 when some local youths dropped a flaming torch that set fire to the structure. It was re-imagined and opened in 1980 as a double decker road and rail link utilising the original towers. Out of tragedy came something really rather splendid.

Spring tides. Apparently not a tide that occurs in spring but rather tides that occur twice a month during the full and new moons when the earth, sun and moon are aligned and the gravitational force is at its greatest. Still impressive though!

Where has the winter gone? It's coming up to half term again and that means some of the attractions in the area will be opening up once more. From this Thursday until the end of the month you can take a ride on the delightful and historic Talyllyn Railway from Tywyn to Nant Gwernol and return. It's a lovely journey and you can get off part way to spend time walking and viewing the waterfalls at Dolgoch. Best of all it's easily accessed from Barmouth by the 'big' train - the Cambrian line. The connecting times are good so why not make a day of it and let the train take the strain?

Here at Bryn Melyn Apartments we're lucky to be surrounded by bird life and if you're a keen 'twitcher', or even just casually interested in spotting our feathered friends, you'll love what you can see around here. Our most recent house-sitters were keen spotters and left us this list of all the birds they had seen over just 8 days staying here. A total of 71 different species! Did you know we're building a model railway in Barmouth. Taking inspiration from Barmouth and the surrounding area it's taking form in the window of Tanio Bermo, Barmouth's community 'Maker Space'. Situated next to The Royal Tanio Bermo is open most Saturdays for you to simply drop-in and try your hand at all manner of craft and tech, but if you simply want to see how we're coming along with the model railway or watch the trains go round you'd be more than welcome!

For today's virtual breath of fresh air we have something a little different - just a few seconds on our sun terrace filmed yesterday morning. Bird song, a gentle breeze, the hint of sunshine... We miss you and will welcome you back when the time is right but for now please stay safe and stay away. #rememberBarmouth

A challenge

I thought I'd post something a little different this week. This is the water tank for our new sprinkler system that was delivered this week but which now presents our installation team with a bit of a headache.....

Our Story

For 8 wonderful years we ran Bryn Melyn as a Guest House. Now we have evolved and have converted the 8 guest rooms into 3 generously-proportioned self-catering apartments, each with its distinct character.

As we have spent more time exploring many beautiful parts of the world we have started to appreciate the flexibility of self-catering so we have sought to combine that ease of use with the Bryn Melyn ethos - providing comfortable, elegant, home-from-home accommodation in the stunning setting of the beautiful Mawddach Estuary. Our apartments have been designed to do just that; a comfortable living space to retire to in the evening and on lazy days at home; a well-equipped kitchen for when you can't be bothered to go out for dinner; comfortable ensuite bedrooms with luxury bathrooms, king-size beds and memory-foam mattresses; a strong wi-fi signal in every room; and let's not forget a view to make your heart sing every time you draw back the curtains.
