Here in the north-west corner of Wales life proceeds at a gentler pace than some other parts of the UK. No HS2 for us, nor even high-speed trains of any kind. Instead we have the Cambrian Coast line, a 2-hourly service right through to Birmingham International Airport. It's quite the contrast, to the shining modernity of the city from the gentle, grassy track of the Welsh coast.

I often hear people say how ugly the old slate workings around Snowdonia/Eryri are, but I always want to say "yes, but......". Some of these old workings can be majestic, but others are being gradually colonised by nature, slowly but surely reverting to a wilder, more natural form. In the meantime the slate grey really sets off the colours of the heather!

The wonderful thing about Snowdonia/Eryri, (well, ONE of the wonderful things!), is that you can experience radically different landscapes within just a short drive. Just above Llan Ffestiniog and temperate rain forests of the Vale of Ffestiniog are the Meignent Moors. Once one them they appear to stretch as far as the eye can see in every direction. Wild and wonderful they are also a blaze of colour at this time of year as the heather comes into flower. A true gem and often-times overlooked.

There are some wonderful walks in this area. We mentioned the Ardudwy Way the other day and this really is a walk that just keeps on giving. The stretch from Llandecwyn to Harlech is magnificent and if you need to cool off a little once you've climbed up from the coast a short detour off the official way brings to this little beauty, Llyn Eiddew-Bach. It's clean, it's refreshing and a great place for wild swimming. Or possibly just sitting and enjoying nature at its best.

Barmouth's promenade is a wonderful amenity. Running for well over a mile it takes you from the bustle of the harbour, past the dunes and the donkeys and the funfair, all the way to the very tip of Barmouth's north beach. Of course if you're feeling especially energetic you can join the weekly park-run (https://www.facebook.com/Ypromenadparkrunabermaw) that covers most of its length. But if you just fancy a gentle stroll then really you can't beat it!

And to think there are people who think that walking up Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa with a thousand other people is the bucket-list activity when actually the smart walkers walk up the adjacent mountains to enjoy the splendid view of Snowdon. The difference is here you have the landscape to yourself. Not an Instagrammer or vlogger in sight. Now THAT'S a bucket-list experience.....

All of our apartments have fabulous views but sometimes they come with a surprise. Can you spot the aircraft? We are at the bottom end of the 'Mach Loop' and it's not unusual to look out of the apartment window and see either jet planes swooping past or sometimes great big planes skimming the bridge and the estuary waters, seemingly below you! If that sounds like your kind of view go to our website, www.brynmelyn.co.uk, to book your autumn short break now.

Walking the many footpaths of this area is generally a total joy but bear in mind that their accessibility can change readily from season to season and even year to year. This is the same stretch of path near Barmouth photographed at the same time of year. The second photo is this August and as you can see it's been a 'good' year for bracken which grows from nothing to almost jungle-proportions within a season. The path is still there and can be walked relatively easily but just watch out for tics after you've brushed through all that foliage!

The stone circle at Bryn Cader Faner is stunning and unique. There's no road access to it, which is part of its appeal, but it can be reached by foot along the Ardudwy Way, a three-day walking trail that stretches from Barmouth to Llandecwyn just short of Penrhyndeudraeth. Fortunately the walk is split into three handy one-day sections and we honestly can't recommend it highly enough.

Another in our occasional series of benches to enjoy...
The National Trust has opened up a number of walks near its first ever parcel of land at Dinas Oleu. Cae Fadog features two separate viewpoints and a number of splendid benches to sit and enjoy the view. On a manic August Sunday when the car park is full it's a delightfully peaceful place to escape to.

Just because it's one of the most famous views in all of north Wales doesn't mean that it's any less deserving of being enjoyed. Some places are popular for a good reason and the mountain village of Beddgelert is one such place. Picture-perfect, it's a lovely place to while away a few hours.

Barmouth's tidal range is around 4 metres, so the difference between the highest and lowest tides is quite significant. You really get a feel for that range when the tide has gone right out. Those boats are just going to have to wait if they want to go anywhere!

Our Story

For 8 wonderful years we ran Bryn Melyn as a Guest House. Now we have evolved and have converted the 8 guest rooms into 3 generously-proportioned self-catering apartments, each with its distinct character.

As we have spent more time exploring many beautiful parts of the world we have started to appreciate the flexibility of self-catering so we have sought to combine that ease of use with the Bryn Melyn ethos - providing comfortable, elegant, home-from-home accommodation in the stunning setting of the beautiful Mawddach Estuary. Our apartments have been designed to do just that; a comfortable living space to retire to in the evening and on lazy days at home; a well-equipped kitchen for when you can't be bothered to go out for dinner; comfortable ensuite bedrooms with luxury bathrooms, king-size beds and memory-foam mattresses; a strong wi-fi signal in every room; and let's not forget a view to make your heart sing every time you draw back the curtains.
