Barmouth Leisure Centre offers a range of activities and sports, including a gym and sauna. The indoor cycling is on the first floor where you get a great view of the beach.

This was the view last week after leaving the "circuits" class.

Update on the flood alleviation scheme outside the Last Inn.

"March 2025

Following some intial unforeseen delays, the installation of the new surface water drainage system has been progressing well and we have now completed the eastbound carriageway works.

On Friday the 21st of March the traffic lights will be swapped over to allow us to progress with the westbound carriageway drainage. From the end of the day on the 11th of April all traffic lights will be removed for the Easter holidays. Works will continue through Easter in the gardens area, within normal working hours. On the 28th of April the traffic lights will be put back up to allow us to finalise the works in the road. We have laid temporary surfacing where we have excavated the road. Once all the works are completed we will be resurfacing the road.

During week commencing the 28th of April we will start works on the main sea wall by installing metal sheet piles. This work will cause increased noise while the piles are being installed. We apologise in advance for the increased disturbance and disruption this works will cause."

It is world poetry day so here is a poem left in the visitor's book at the The George III by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

There is an event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his visit to the area.

Penmaen Pool
Gerard Manley Hopkins
For the Visitors' Book at the Inn

Who long for rest, who look for pleasure
Away from counter, court, or school
O where live well your lease of leisure
But here at, here at Penmaen Pool?

You'll dare the Alp? you'll dart the skiff?--
Each sport has here its tackle and tool:
Come, plant the staff by Cadair cliff;
Come, swing the sculls on Penmaen Pool.

What's yonder?--Grizzled Dyphwys dim:
The triple-hummocked Giant's stool,
Hoar messmate, hobs and nobs with him
To halve the bowl of Penmaen Pool.

And all the landscape under survey,
At tranquil turns, by nature's rule,
Rides repeated topsyturvy
In frank, in fairy Penmaen Pool.

And Charles's Wain, the wondrous seven,
And sheep-flock clouds like worlds of wool.
For all they shine so, high in heaven,
Shew brighter shaken in Penmaen Pool.

The Mawddach, how she trips! though throttled
If floodtide teeming thrills her full,
And mazy sands all water-wattled
Waylay her at ebb, past Penmaen Pool.

But what 's to see in stormy weather,
When grey showers gather and gusts are cool?--
Why, raindrop-roundels looped together
That lace the face of Penmaen Pool.

Then even in weariest wintry hour
Of New Year's month or surly Yule
Furred snows, charged tuft above tuft, tower
From darksome darksome Penmaen Pool.

And ever, if bound here hardest home,
You've parlour-pastime left and (who'll
Not honour it?) ale like goldy foam
That frocks an oar in Penmaen Pool.

Then come who pine for peace or pleasure
Away from counter, court, or school,
Spend here your measure of time and treasure
And taste the treats of Penmaen Pool.

We are pleased to announce the details of the Society’s day visit to Barmouth on the 150th anniversary of Hopkins’ visit, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Penmaenpool, Gwyn…

Runners, if you want a scenic, straighforward, flat 10k run, catch the T3 bus (from Barmouth) to the Penmaenpool Toll Bridge, cross the bridge (charges apply) and run back along the flat Mawddach Estuary. The 10k will then finish part way across the bridge.

The route is the best journey in the world according to the poet John Ruskin.

I have been out delivering Town Guides to serviced accommodation and pubs by bike and trailer.

This was taken at one of those places, but where am I?

Edit. It's not Hendre Mynach, Barmouth as that is neither a pub nor serviced accommodation.

Currently ancestrydotcom is giving free access to the 1921 census until 9th March as part of Women's History Month. This is the first census where the occupant fills in the names and the information (but not the index page). It also includes employer's name and address.
Unfortunately, whoever transcribed them wasn't familiar with the area, or maybe even Welsh words.

Here are a few of the transriptions.
Cors y Gedol Hotel is transcribed as Claygate Hotel
Tanycoed - Tanycold
Tanyrallt - Taurallt
Glanaber - Glovaber
The Haven - The Hover
Bennar Terrace - Berrer Tce
Goronwy Terrace - Goroug Tce
Siloam Buildings - Silver Buildings

Good luck if you are doing some research on a building or family history.

🔵 IMPORTANT INFORMATION 🔵
Notification of price increase effective 31st March 2025.

With the impending increase in National Living Wage and the spiralling cost of timber and materials, we are forced to raise prices for bridge crossings.

In order to maintain the bridge to the standard required and to keep local people in jobs, this price increase becomes effective as from Monday 31st March. We have been speaking to our regular/local customers during the past 4 weeks and we thank you for your understanding and continued support,

We wish to state that any abuse aimed at our Toll Keepers in relation to the price increase, simply won’t be tolerated.

Unfortunately it appears that our news has already been shared, before we had chance to officially share it ourselves. We can see there has been some negative comments, therefore we are turning off comments on this post but if you have any questions, please message us directly.

We wish to preserve this beautiful Grade ll listed Toll Bridge and keep a warm welcome, from a real person, when you cross the bridge.

Thank you 🙏
