I think I just became Pippi Lingstocking’s birthing partner! 😳

She was clearly wanting to lay an egg, but every time I tried to leave her to it she got up and ran after me.

In the end I sat down in the straw opposite her & closed the door of the barn so it was just us two (& a couple of agorophobic turkeys). Within seconds she settled down & laid an egg!

I hope she’s not going to require this every day! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Today I collected 4 very special hens & I’m so happy 🥰

They have their own cosy space with food & water, within the barn but separated from the other hens.

They can still see each other, so it will give them time to settle in and get to know the rest of the flock safely.

In a few days, once they are comfortable and accepted, we will wait until it is dark at night and then put them in amongst the other hens. That way they will all wake up in the morning as one happy flock…

We will keep you updated!

New hens:
1 Lavender Araucana
1 Wellsummer
1 White Leghorn
1 Sapphire Sunset

I’m loving all the colour in the gardens just now ❤️🩷💜💙💚

But due to a rash moment of online shopping when the garden was looking not so full, I now have to find homes for 53 new plants and 50 bulbs 🙈

It better look even more amazing next year…

We love broody ducks! 💚🦆💚

At the moment we have two:

Pepper is sitting on 5 eggs, due to hatch next week (we think), safely snuggled in a soft nest inside a large nesting box on the ground. Well done Pepper.

Meanwhile, Tufty made a precarious nest on top of the compost heap, under a wheelbarrow 🙄 Her 7 eggs kept rolling off, so we have relocated her into a nesting box (still on top of the heap) & put the wheelbarrow back over it.

She seems happy.

Fingers crossed for lots of ducklings soon! 🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣

There are no such things as weeds, in our wildlife garden.

Cleavers, stinging nettles & buttercups sit perfectly happily alongside honesty, hosta & bluebells.

I love it when birds bring us unexpected gifts, and the aquilegia, poppies & foxglove self seed wherever they choose.

We have a path running round the back of our wildlife pond & every year I have to lift & re-lay the stepping-stones, because the plants let me know where the path is going to be this year!

I listen to the garden because it tells me what it wants to do.

The insects love the combination of water, native flowers & plenty of hidey-holes 💚 🐝 🦋 🐛 💚
