Jo from Locala’s Engagement Team was at The Whitehouse Centre last week, asking patients about their experience.

One couple, who were there for their first appointment, said they were very happy with the service.

Jo says:

“They only spoke Arabic and used their phone to translate our conversation. We took turns talking into the phone, and our words were converted into written English or Arabic. They were really impressed that patients’ opinions and ideas are listened to. They asked me a lot about my role, and what they said translated to, ‘We appreciate your high morals in your job.’”

Meanwhile, a 5-year-old patient gave a ‘thumbs up’ for the Whitehouse Centre and told Jo, “You are my Bestie Granny!” 😊

Locala’s 0-19 Service is proud to deliver targeted programmes that support the unique needs of young people:

➡Thornhill Academy Girls' Exploitation Programme – a specialised intervention delivered in response to the school's specific safeguarding concerns. This programme focused on sexual health, self-esteem, and the prevention of unhealthy relationships, providing a safe space for students to learn and engage.

➡Positive Choices Programme – a flexible, ongoing initiative delivered as needed to help young people understand the realities of parenthood, reduce teenage pregnancy rates, and foster healthy relationships.

Both initiatives highlight Locala’s commitment to safeguarding and empowering young people in vulnerable situations. 🌟🙌

Earlier this week our TB nurses spent an afternoon promoting World TB Day (24th March) with a pop-up stall in the Outpatients waiting area at Dewsbury District Hospital.

Information posters and leaflets were clearly displayed, encouraging passers-by to ask more about both latent and active TB. Visitors were also invited to take a Locala pen, keyring, or coaster as a reminder.

Consultants, nurses, and healthcare assistants took leaflets to help spread TB awareness in their areas. All in all, a productive day for the North Kirklees TB community! 👏

Electrician Johnnie has fitted new lights in the waiting room at Princess Royal Health Centre.

Feedback from both patients and colleagues indicated that the lights were harsh and uncomfortably bright. The new fittings now provide a softer, white light.

Johnnie says the old fittings will be reused in non-clinic areas. 💡

We always value patient feedback and use it to make meaningful improvements to our services. 👏

Jo from Locala's Engagement Team was at St John's Health Centre in Halifax recently, meeting some of our dental care patients. 🦷

One of our younger patients had an appointment with Dental Nurse Cheryl and came with his mum. They were both impressed by how kind the team was and how they explained what they were going to do. They also liked that the fluoride coating tasted like banana! 🍌

After the appointment, our patient chose the happy emoji! 😃

It's Neurodiversity Celebration Week, an important time to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. 🧠

At Locala, we've hosted two bitesize training sessions for all colleagues, covering topics such as:

- What neurodiversity is and the different types of neurodivergence
- The concept of a spiky profile
- Neurodivergent strengths and contributions in the workplace
- Neurodiversity, inclusion, and the workplace
- Reasonable adjustments and Health Passports

This week provides an opportunity to build awareness and understanding of neurodiversity, reflect on how we support neurodivergent colleagues and service users, and explore the tools available within Locala.

A big thank you to Preeya and Donna Oldman, our Health Inequalities and Inclusion Leads, for coordinating the sessions! 👏

Rosie, a mum to a toddler and a newborn, recently shared her story with Joanne from Locala’s Engagement Team about the exceptional support she received from Jo, a Health Visitor.

At 37 weeks pregnant and struggling with a broken ankle and severe morning sickness, Rosie felt overwhelmed trying to care for her toddler. But Jo went above and beyond during her antenatal visit. Not only did she offer practical help, like sorting sick bags and offering to do the dishwasher, but she also made sure Rosie felt listened to and supported.

Jo didn’t stop there - she followed up with helpful resources, arranged baby massage sessions for the family, and has stayed in touch, offering continued support as Rosie’s recovery progresses.

With 18 years of experience, Jo knows how vital it is to support both parents, including fathers, and ensure the whole family thrives.
