Maiden Castle, Dorchester, is the largest hill fort in Britain and one of the largest in Europe.

Built in 600 BC, the fort is on top of a large hill which is 914m long. In the Iron Age, hundreds of people lived in a thriving community on top of this hill! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Honey News!
We have a very limited stock of honey that was taken off of a couple of strong hives last week. There may be a little more at the end of the month but the bees get priority claim. The current weather being sustained is tough on flowering plants and so they produce less nectar - which is tough on the bees!
If you would like a jar then please shout and we'll put one aside.

Glow Worms!
We’ve not seen glow worms here before at Dorset Croft, so it was exciting to have 7 females displaying in our garden last night. The photos are of the same female, one taken with a flash and the other without flash.
We have been told that the season will last a few weeks so we will look in other areas in the coming nights and hope we have more to show our guests.

Summer Visitors
The house martins are out and about and the bats are in their summer roosts.
Roe deer pass through all year, but two or three seem to like to stay around the woods and our ponds in the summer. The best times to see them are dawn and dusk, but, although they are shy, they are sometimes seen during the day.
This one got up late the other day.

Swarm season! These clips show the extremes of swarm sizes. The big swarm flew to a vacant hive in my apiary and you'll see the workers marching in - more than 20,000 of them! The little swarm was a few days later and I nearly didn't notice them - a couple of thousand bees clustered at the top of a fence post. I collected them and popped them in a spare hive. Both colonies doing well.🐝

The much anticipated statue of Mary Anning has been unveiled in Lyme Regis and it's a really good, apt statue in a good spot. It’s easy to visit the lovely seaside town of Lyme Regis from Dorset Croft and to do a bit of gentle fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast. Mary Anning Rocks

You are going to have to zoom right in on this - this hastily taken picture of a magnificent white mature buck fallow deer was taken on the edge of the village. I saw it only for a few seconds so couldn't get a better picture. We have mostly roe deer here and fallow deer are less commonly seen. I hope that it stays in the area so that our guests might see this beautiful animal when they take a walk from Dorset Croft. 🦌
