Even when they have died back and lost all their colour hydrangea heads are still full of character. These have seen more than their share of frost this winter. I was once told you should not cut the heads off until the new leaves are starting to show in the spring. Apparently they are a great refuge for spiders and other bugs during bad weather. Whether that is true or not it is at least a good excuse to put off the job until the warmer weather.

Maybe we won’t be dining al fresco today. But the better weather will come again and we look forward to welcoming guests to Beauly Station and the Downright Gabbler in the future. And, hopefully, once the vaccine has been rolled out we can enjoy a glass or two in good company again.

After a couple of days of persistent heavy rain it is a joy to wake up to a crisp, still dry day. Clear skies, with a soft mist rising from the fields and river, make it quite mystical. The railway to Inverness could be a track to the unknown. Guests at the Station and the Downright Gabbler can enjoy journeys to the west coast or to the far North through wonderful scenery and on days like this it is quite stunning.

It was a wild day. The sort of day you think twice about going for a walk. But the Reelig Glen is always a bit more sheltered than other places. Wet underfoot and persistent rain but still a glorious spot. The waterfall at the top is always special but with this amount of water cascading down it is quite spectacular. And if you visit Beauly Station or the Downright Gabbler you will always have a cosy haven to retire to after your exertions.

A hard frost last night adding a good sparkle to the garden this morning. I think this will see off the last few leaves clinging on to the apple tree.

There are lots of berries on the holly bushes outside the Old Station. The hedgerows are full of rose hips, elder and sloes as well. And the rowan trees are laden. Is it a sign of a hard winter to come? More likely the sign of a good growing year. But I am sure the birds and animals that depend on them in the months to come will enjoy the abundance. Fortunately some of the nicest days for exploring the countryside are during Atumn so its a great time for a short break here or at www.downrightgabbler.co.uk

Autumn is a brilliant time to visit the Highlands. We get some glorious days for walking, driving and sightseeing. The colour on the trees is spectacular and changes almost as you watch.
But one of the things I really like about autumn is coming home and settling in for the night. I see that our guests in Lord Lovat’s waiting room have the wood burning stove on. I hope they have a glass of something nice to fortify themselves for another days exploring tomorrow.

Autumn is a great time for spotting fungi. The woods are full of all sorts of curiosities but these spectacular specimens were right outside the Beauly Station earlier today. Old Meg found them interesting.

When the north wind doth blow
And we shall have snow
What will the poor robin do then, poor thing?

He will just have a bath with a bit of a splash
And carefully wash under each wing.

Despite some rain and wind over the last few days the flowers in Beauly are still looking fabulous. Thankfully September is often one of our finest months and they should still be in great shape for visitors over the coming weeks. Today was gorgeous - a portent of a lovely autumn, I hope.

Our Hydrangeas were a bit late this year but the heads and colour are fantastic. This bush was bought about 20 years ago as a bit of dry twig in a plastic bag. It came from a supermarket and, to be honest, resembled kindling more than a live plant. It never flowered for several years but now we get a great show. I think it cost £3.00 so I don’t think it owes us much. It’s success is down to benign neglect rather than any gardening skill on our part.

Social distancing, even on a wonderfully warm and sunny August day, is easy on this stretch of coast near Nairn.
What a wonderful place to walk the dogs, have a picnic, fly a kite, play with a ball or, if you are brave, have a swim.
Only 20 miles from Beauly Station it’s one of the places we recommend guests check out.
It is one of many really special places within a short drive.

Took this picture at the Lily Loch, about 2 miles from the Old Station. Never realised until I got home that there was a dragonfly on the lily. Pure fluke; but I will take any credit going.
