So last week I went on an organised Northern Lights Flight Experience with one of our suppliers. What an amazing opportunity and well worth the money, shame Aurora didn’t do much of a show and not very visible to the naked eye but we got these fantastic pictures from our camera.

Photos were taken by who accompanied me on the trip.

The day started in the Holiday Inn near Gatwick Airport at 3.15pm where we had an astronomer talk through and show us what causes the Northern Lights and what we would be expecting to see that night.
Refreshments were available.

From here we made our own way to Gatwick North Terminal for checkin.
No getting to the airport 2 hours prior. We went straight from checkin, through security, managed to grab some water and snack for the plane and straight to the boarding gate.

We took off just after 7pm, slightly later than planned. After around 25 minutes later all the lights in the plane were switched off, only the emergency lights remained on.
Once in position over the sea north of UK, between Norway and Iceland we were told by the Air Traffic Control the lights on the plane wings could also be turned off to reduce all light pollution.

We did a figure of 8 in the air for around 1.5-2 hours so we all had the opportunity to view north and we rotated in our seats so each passenger also had same time at the window seat. All through this the astronomer was talking through what can be seen from each window.

We saw star constellations, the Milky Way, planets and a glimpse of Aurora just above the horizon.

When we were on our way back to the airport the lights were switched on and we were offered a Bagel, Crisps, biscuits and hot and cold drinks (no alcohol)
We landed around 10.45pm

This trip is good for anyone who is interested in the night sky and would like to view Aurora from the air. I found it really good.

We travelled to Gatwick airport but they do also do these from Birmingham. They run on specific dates from October to March each year
