Castle Cottage, set just off the Harbour Road on the outskirts of Ballintoy village, is perfect for romantic weekends, family holidays or for those looking for a base for walking. Ballintoy is a sleepy little village half way between the Giant’s Causeway and the town of Ballycastle. With its picturesque harbour and the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge it is a popular destination for those wishing for a restful break from the hustle and bustle. It is also becoming well-known for its numerous "Game of Thrones" film locations. Castle Cottage is a compact cottage built in the traditional Irish style but with all modern facilities. The kitchen has oven and hob, fridge/freezer and microwave. T.V., DVD, washer/dryer, ironing facilities and hairdryer are also provided. Books and board games are available for your entertainment. To compliment the central heating the cosy kitchen/living room also features a log-burning stove. The cottage has two bedrooms – a double master bedroom and a second bedroom with twin bunks most suitable for children - and a shower room. The garden includes a deck area overlooking the historic Ballintoy Church, with views to Rathlin Island and the Mull of Kintyre (Scotland) beyond. Patio furniture and gas barbeque are provided. The cottage is only a short walk from Ballintoy harbour with its coffee shop or (in the opposite direction) to the village with its pubs/resturants, confectionery shops and childrens’ playground. Live traditional music is provided in the local pubs most weekends throughout the year. For those interested in walking it is adjacent to the coastal path, which stretches from Portstewart to Ballycastle, taking in Dunluce Castle, the Giant’s Causeway, Dunseverick Castle and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.

The castle by the ocean

There is something special about standing at the edge of a basaltic cliff, with the surround sound symphony of the Atlantic breakers and the last fleeting warmth of the spring sunlight on your face. Good for the soul...

A wooden fishing boat dating back to the 1800s that was submerged below sand has been found on a Co Antrim beach following the recent storms.

‘Fairhead on the Sea of Moyle’

Fairhead is a 600ft dolerite columned cliff face carved by the same volcanic forces that created the nearby ‘Giants Causeway’ over 60 million years ago.

Fairhead towers over the ‘Sea of Moyle’ made famous by the myth ‘The Children of Lir’. This tale states that 4 children were put under a spell that turned them into swans, they then spent 300 years floating these turbulent waters below this cliff, unable to come ashore until the spell was finally broken. 🦢

A beautiful walk along the headland, and our little cottage nestled in the little group of houses just visible in the middle of the photo ☺️

Here is a view of the walk between Carrick a Rede and Ballintoy Church, when traffic is at a high level the quarry floor becomes an overspill car park. The path follows the fence along the top of the old quarry which you can see in the image, Ballintoy Harbour is just visible to the right of the image.

Hard to believe this headland once (circa 1840s) reached out to the tip of what we see today and stood tall with the remains of a large promontory fort on the top. Over a hundred years of limestone extraction took place here until the early 60s, as a kid I remember the sounds of explosions when I stayed in the village with my relatives. Several years after its closure the site was absorbed by the National Trust.

Fascinating location, I will post a view from the path for those who have never been and are thinking about a visit.
