As a critically endangered species, rhinos face threats such as poaching, and habitat loss. Conservationists protect them through anti-poaching patrols, habitat preservation, and community engagement for long-term survival.

In the 1970s, Kenya was home to over 20,000 black rhinos. In the following 20 years the population was decimated by poaching which reduced numbers to less than 400. Black rhinos were declared critically endangered.

In 1993, in the area that is now Ol Pejeta Conservancy, there were only 20 black rhinos that remained, but over the coming years, the land was transformed. Habitat restoration, innovative anti-poaching measures, and dedicated rangers combined to revive our black rhino population. Today, Ol Pejeta is home to the largest black rhino population in East Africa.
