Feeling chilly? Did you know, the winters of 1858 and ’68 were so severe that the canal froze over? Horse-drawn “icebreaker” boats had to be used so that trading could continue❄️

The harsh weather led to the Workhouse Guardians of the Poor challenging the Mayor for better working conditions, like more regular pay, food and shelter.

When the Roundhouse stables were built in 1874, this was one of the first wharves to offer shelter for regular stone-breakers⚒️

We don’t need icebreaker boats any more, but the network can still get pretty icy, as this shot taken last winter shows! We are looking forward to next year, where you can admire these views in warmer climates, on our picturesque Green Escape kayak tour. 🌳

Roundhouse Birmingham, and held a unique celebration of light, music and heritage in the heart of Birmingham. ⭐ ✨

Our cobbled courtyard was filled with light, lanterns and music, before our guests set off along the canal, led in a procession by a 1930s heritage working boat, to the CBSO centre for an evening of live music. It was a truly special day.

A huge thank you to the CBSO, Canal and River Trust, our volunteers and .uk for such a special day.

Did you know this week, it was World Toilet Day? Instead of showing you a picture of our toilets, we wanted to share the history of the Night Soil Workers.

From 1853 onwards, the Birmingham Corporation took on the responsibility for collecting the town’s human waste. Night Soil Workers did the dirty work, and stabled their horses and kept the carts here at the Roundhouse.

In 1872, the Sanitary Committee called for more latrines to be built to take liquids to sewers, keeping the solid waste separate for collection. This was the Night Soil, taken to local wharves and used for fertilising crops 💩

Our closest wharf was Holliday Street, now a luxury spot for shopping and dining surrounding the Mailbox! How times change.

Find out more about the Night Soil Workers in our Visitor Centre displays, open Wednesday - Sunday 09:30 - 16:30.

Today is the National Lottery’s 30th Anniversary and Roundhouse Birmingham was awarded an enterprise grant in 2017 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Our charity was created through a landmark partnership between Canal & River Trust and the National Trust which aimed to find a new and sustainable purpose for one of Birmingham’s hidden gems, the Roundhouse. The funding helped us to reinvent and revive the Roundhouse into what we are today.

Onsite today, we remember our funders and backers through special bricks on our way into our visitor centre. These tell our story as a charity.
