Aishah's reading challenge update:

I have been in a bit of a reading slump recently so I haven’t made huge progress in the reading challenge but one of the book I did read covered a couple of prompts on the checklist.
I brought two books with me when I went on my holiday. The first was How the Girl Guides Won the War by Janie Hampton, which covered my non-fiction book and was very appropriate seeing as I was at a Scout and Guide camp!

The other was The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, which covered two prompts, it was 'a book selected by The Willoughby Book Club team', as Liv recommended it for me and I read it while I was in Norway, and it covered 'a book set in the country you’re in'.
And both were very good reads that I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend!

And finally for 'a book about books', I got to finally read a Christmas present from one of my brothers, Days at the Morisaki Bookshop, by Satoshi Yagisawa. It was a about a girl going through a very difficult time in her life and finding solace working in her uncle’s bookstore. It was very heartfelt book and I really enjoyed it.

How's the reading challenge going for you?

Alisha's reading challenge update:

I really like to use the reading challenge prompts when I’m struggling to figure out what I want to read next. It’s been a good way for me to pick through my many piles of unread books!

I used two prompts – ‘A non-fiction book’ and ‘A book in a genre you wouldn’t usually chose’ when reading Wild by Amy Jeffs. A non-fiction book is not normally my first choice as I always lean towards fiction. However, this book piqued my interest, as it’s about British mythology and the history behind the myths. As an archaeology graduate, this book was right up my street!

This year, I read Intimacies by Katie Kitamura, which is ‘a book I’ve been given’ by Liv, who’s also read it. It was a surprisingly quick and easy read, despite the subject matter. Set in The Hague, it follows an interpreter who is looking for a place to call home, amid the seriousness of interpreting for a former president accused of war crimes. I suppose this could count for ‘A book selected by us’ too…?

And I’m currently reading Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi, which has been on my shelf for a while and is ‘a book I’ve been meaning to read for more than 2 years’! I've read other titles by Oyeyemi before and I’m liking this just as much. It’s just as weird, magical and fairytale-like as her other books and I’m really glad I decided to finally pick it up.

Chloe's reading challenge update:

A couple of prompts that I've enjoyed and have surprised me!

'Seasonal book' prompt

I am just in the middle of reading ‘Midsummer Mysteries’ by Agatha Christie. A book of summertime-themed short stories set in wonderful destinations like Cornwall & the French Riviera and featuring well-known characters such as Inspector Poirot and Miss Marple.

This is an easy book to pick up and put down when you have a spare half an hour to sit in the garden as the stories are easy to get into and all relatively short…perfect for being outside in this lovely weather.

'A Genre You Wouldn’t Normally Choose' prompt

I have also recently read the first book in the Bridgerton series, which as this is something I would NEVER pick myself, I would class this as ‘a genre you wouldn’t normally choose’.

My friend is a huge Bridgerton fan having read all the books and watching the series, and is always trying to recommend them to me. I am not a fan of regency themes at all so would never choose to read or watch this type of genre. But, I thought I would give it a go so bought The Duke and I to see what all the hype was about.

I absolutely loved it! It wasn’t what I was expecting at all, I thought it would be very serious and complicated but it was easy to read and quite humorous & light-hearted at times. I’ve already got the second one on my wish-list.

Liv's Reading Challenge Update:

I've ticked off a couple of the Willoughby Reading Challenge prompts, including 'Shortlisted for a Prize', when I read the phenomenal Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad. Timely, profound and beautifully written, I'd urge everyone to pick up this book from their local bookshop or library.

I also completed a 'toofer', with the 'Tearjerker' and 'A Book by a Debut Author' prompts, having read and enjoyed the warm and understated Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hession. It was one of those books you pick up on a whim, with few expectations. Yet the unique, charming characters and slow, well-observed humour have really stuck with me.

I am looking forward to chipping away at some of the remaining prompts, particularly 'A Book With an Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral On the Cover' and 'A Funny book'. I often read quite serious books, so it'll be nice to escape into something that will make me properly laugh!

Now more than ever, we believe it's important to read widely, diversely and from many different points of views.

Marianne's reading challenge update:

I’ve been really enjoying the reading challenge this year. I have felt spurred on to read more and I’m well on my way to exceeding 2023’s totals read (not that it’s about quantity of course!).

My 'non-fiction' favourite so far has been Naomi Klein’s Doppelganger, a really fascinating and compelling read.

‘A backlist title by an author you like’ was an easy one for me because I usually read a lot of backlist titles anyway, but I read Kevin Barry’s That Old Country Music, having absolutely loved The Heart in Winter, his new title for 2024. Short story collections can be a little overlooked, but a well crafted short story is a wonderful thing to read.

I’m terrible for stockpiling books that I fancy and never getting round to reading them, so I particularly needed the prompt ‘A book you’ve been meaning to read for 2 years or more’ to give me a little nudge toward tackling the TBR pile.
I read All the Birds, Singing, by Evie Wyld, so I’m aiming to re-use this prompt and some of the others to continue working my way through the book hoard.

Have you tried any of the prompts? What's been your favourite? What's surprised you the most?
