Today Parliament will hear the second reading of The Elections Bill 2021. Amongst the Trumpian changes it will bring is a photo ID requirement to vote, which will make it harder for working class, older and Black, Asian and ethnic minority people to vote. This benefits Conservatives like Scott Benton, who have no doubt factored this into their plans precisely to deny these groups a voice.

As it stands three and a half million people - or 7.5% of the electorate - don’t hold photo ID, often because they simply can’t afford it. What this discriminatory move does is lock them out of the ballot box and block their right to vote, a right which many have fought and sometimes died to earn.

Voting in Britain is already fair and safe, with only 139 cases of voter fraud amongst the millions of votes cast over the last few years and just one conviction in 2019 out of 59 million votes.

Don’t let the Tories steal your vote. We’ve fought too hard for that. ❌
