We are delighted to announce that Cornwall Wildlife Trust has received £265,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for our ambitious new project - Tor to Shore.

The project will create a thriving land and seascape rich in wildlife, connecting the granite rocks on Helman Tor, our biggest nature reserve, to the spectacular waters of St Austell Bay, home to important seagrass and maerl habitats.

At the heart of our ambitions for the area are plans to bring together people and communities from all backgrounds to act for, connect with, and benefit from nature.

Huge thanks to players!

Looking for a great walk? Taking in the view from the top of Treffry Viaduct near St Austell is a wonderful way to enjoy the evening sun!

Treffry Viaduct and the Luxulyan Valley were once a hive of industrial activity and would have looked quite different to the idyllic landscape you see here now.

The viaduct was built between 1839 and 1842 to carry both a tramway and a high-level water channel (known as a leat) across the valley for local mining entrepreneur, Joseph Thomas Treffry. This was part of a local transport system designed to carry resources to the port of Par.

The first large civil engineering structure of its kind to be built in Cornwall and the only known viaduct in Britain to combine these two uses, it is now a Scheduled Monument and part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage site, as designated by UNESCO.

This feat of engineering required an expert workforce to design and build it. This included Treffry’s steward, William Pease, who is thought to have been pivotal in its planning and construction; James Meadows Rendel, one of the foremost civil engineers of the period; Henry Rowe, a stonemason and building contractor; and a host of strong, highly skilled workmen.

Our recent stay at Tor View Cottage was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning views that seemed to stretch on forever. The cottage itself was cozy, well-equipped, and provided the perfect home-away-from-home experience.

One of the highlights of our stay was the breathtaking scenery visible from nearly every window. Whether sipping our morning coffee or winding down in the evening, the picturesque landscape never failed to amaze us. We spent countless hours simply soaking in the beauty that surrounded us.

Our little one had an absolute blast exploring the area. The safe, expansive surroundings allowed for plenty of walks and adventures, and it was heartwarming to see his excitement each day. He truly missed the freedom and fun of Tor View Cottage once we returned home.

The hospitality we received was top-notch, making our stay even more enjoyable. The attention to detail and the warm, welcoming atmosphere ensured that we felt comfortable and cared for throughout our visit.

In summary, Tor View Cottage provided us with an unforgettable escape filled with stunning views, wonderful walks, and precious family moments. We are already looking forward to our next visit and can't wait to create more memories in this enchanting place. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a serene and scenic getaway!

Thank you very much Teresa!!!
We had a great time. 😊

Looking for a great day out this weekend? Treffry Viaduct in the Luxulyan Valley is the perfect place to stretch your legs and we’ve just created a new walking trail which means you can travel there by train!

The viaduct can be reached on foot from Luxulyan train station by taking the following walking route. You will partly follow the Saints’ Way – a route which is thought to have been used by early Christian pilgrims. The area is steeped in history and you will pass many remains of the industrial past on your journey, some of which you can see marked on this map.

The highlight of the walk is heading across the top of the viaduct. Its ten arches, which are 90 feet high, each have a span of 40 feet and are quite a sight to behold. This vantage point offers a spectacular view of the Luxulyan Valley. This walking trail has been created thanks to funding from GWR and we’re hugely grateful for its support!

We’re hosting a special Nature Discovery Day at Treffry Viaduct this May half term, and invite you all to join us!

Taking place on Tuesday 28th May from 11am – 2pm, visitors will have the chance to spot the signs of Spring at this 19th-century architectural wonder hidden in the beautiful Luxulyan Valley near St Austell.

Once a hive of industrial activity, this incredible historic place has very much been reclaimed by nature and there is a wealth of wonderful wildlife for you to discover there.

There’ll be lots to get involved with including bird identification, a nature trail around the valley, and even the chance to make your own bird feeder and wildflower pot.

There’s no need to book and you don’t need to be members. Just come along and enjoy!

This event has been made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and we’re hugely grateful for its support.
