This month’s fishing report from the River Camel in Cornwall from written for Trout & Salmon magazine:

We now near the end of September here on the Butterwell stretch of the River Camel. The sea-trout run seems to be dwindling with the cooler temperatures. We have seen one or two fresh fish daily over the last few weeks, but fishing for them has been tricky. Over the weekend, with the warmer temperatures, we have noticed large numbers of peel in the river below the Butterwell beats, which suggests there will be good spawning for trout this year. This week could be the last good night fishing until next year. We end the sea-trout season at time of writing with just under seventy sea-trout in the catch record, the largest being 5lb.

Two salmon have been caught and returned in the latter half of the month by Mike Laughlin and Jake Dodge, of 6.5lb and 9lb respectively, and a close encounter with a third fish that managed to evade capture. This brings optimism that this could be a better year for the salmon fishing. The river has just dropped back down after heavy rainfall over the weekend brought it up approximately two foot.

Given the forecast it seems we got a lot less rain than predicted, but hopefully enough to entice some salmon into the system.
