Hednesford Raceway May Day Bank Holiday Monday Special

National Hot Rods, Stock Rods, Mini Stox, Bomber Destruction Derby & Dutch Reverse Car Racing!

Fans of the National Hot Rod formula witnessed a rare treat with the welcome return of former World Champion #88 Peter Grimer, racing last year’s Fiesta but with a smart new paint job. However, the laps didn’t quite go according to plan as Peter’s day ended in a heavy shunt against the barrier. Heat and final winner was #734 Ralph Sanders. Mark Jones ( #332) was runner up with # 129 Joe Tandy third. Other heat winner was #31 Dick Hillard.

The ‘Rod’ element of the day continued with a healthy entry of Stock Rods and a returnee to the formula Gary Chapman ( #806) who, by his own quick standards, took both heat wins. But could he make it a ‘hat-trick’ as well! Sadly, it was not to be as Scottish star Jock Burgoine drove an excellent race to take the final chequred flag.

The Mini Stox mayhem continued with a last lap thriller resulting in a dead heat for joint winners Carl Willets ( #7) and Craig Bromley ( #49) after a yellow flag tyre intervention two laps from the finish line.

And if the Mini’s weren’t entertaining enough then check out the Bomber heats as no less than 40 cars covered the raceway’s quarter mile oval from virtually end-to-end. In the end after many pile ups, roll overs and jack-ins it was Richard Atkins who came out unscathed to take the flag in his Granada not once but twice as he weaved in and out of all the carnage around him. In the Destruction Derby drivers like Hartopp ( #126), Ashley ( #293) and #27 Summerhayes gave it their all but in the last hurrah the only two left standing after a multitude of hits was Atkins and Dean French ( #269). But as they both set to work on each other there was a sudden silence which spelt disaster for Atkins and Deano, as ever, was awarded the win.

Finally the WYTV cameras covered a special on track presentation made to Dean French for his victory at the 7th staging of the Spedeworth Banger Figure of Eight World Championship at Wimbledon Stadium as well as three races from the highly entertaining Dutch Reverse Car Racing Team who brought across the water a 14 car entry of modified Volvos, Daffs, an assortment of VWs and a lone Ford Es**rt - all racing in reverse gear backwards at insane speeds. No pushing, bumping or spinning another competitor was allowed but while your cars stuck in reverse gear incidents can happen as you will soon find out.

So sit back and re-live all the action with this highly entertaining thrill a minute meeting from the 1993 season brought to you initially by the guys from West Yorkshire TV and now the boys from DH Video.

Hednesford Raceway Opening Meeting of the season

National Hot Rods, National Super Rods, Mini Stox & Bangers

60 years ago Bill Morris’ dream of racing English bodied cars on short oval race tracks and branded as American style stock cars became a reality at Hednesford Raceway in 1963. 30 years on the Hot Rods of 1993 were very different from those early models and even now, in today’s world, they have massively progressed into very sophisticated, safe and exciting race cars.

With action caught expertly by West Yorkshire TV cameras, follow the progress of ( #639) Ricky Hunn’s rapid Peugeot 205 as he carved his way through a very tightly packed field starting from the back as a red top to win the final from Martin Lawrence ( #112) and popular returnee Paul Sheard ( #18).

Backing up the speed and power of the Hot Rods were the Ford based Super Rods. Although losing heat two to newcomer Mike Smith it didn’t take long for the dominance of Stuart ‘Joe Cool’ Donald (as he was known from his grass track days) to wind his way to the front of the highly challenging 11 car grid. Closest challengers in the 25 lap clutch start final were the Sierra’s of ( #52) Mick Roberston, ( #35) Phil Bell, and ( #79) Lester Stacey.

Heat 2 of the Mini Stox formula turned out to be was a real bruiser that eliminated half the field with a big pile up after the first couple of laps. In the end it was Carl Willetts who took his first final despite the advances being made by Spedeworth ace Jo Polley. Moment of the meet belonged to Simon Bromley who in heat 1 found himself taking the east bend on his ‘door handles’.

The Bangers were as ever in great car crashing form. Where else would you see a Lancia Trevi, Alfa Giulietta and a BMW mixing it up with hordes of Cortinas and a couple of ‘long nose’ Capris! There was some fast and furious racing, especially featuring some spectacular rolls by a couple of Cortinas while Andy McGowan became the centre of attention in a massive pit straight pile up. Not unlike the Mini Stox there seemed to be a bit of a competition going on for two wheel car balancing as Darren Kelly ( #123) and ( #201) Gary Chapman showed their skills on separate occasions. In the final it was ( #101) Keith Roberts who lasted the longest for the trophy win from ( #222) Barry Chick. The DVD finishes with a spectacular 5 minute montage of all the ‘hardest of hard’ crashes, hits and rollovers from 1992.

Hednesford Raceway Opening Meeting of the season

National Super Rods Spring Classic, Lightning Rods, Mini Stox & Bomber DD

The 1993 season at Hednesford raceway kicked off with the first of many championships for the National Super Rods – the Spring Classic – the third outing of the year for the big, brash and predominantly Ford based formula of the short ovals and West Yorkshire TV was there to cover all the action in a three or four camera broadcast quality video some 30 years ago!

With no less than 14 cars gridded up for this 30 lap classic encounter, having won the heats the final indeed was all about Stuart Donald’s ( #24) Sierra Sapphire from Mick Robertson’s #52 and Jim Brown’s revolutionary BMW M3 ( #88). There were a couple of rookie’s drivers to the formula in the form of former Lightning Rod racer Allan Roberston ( #71) and former Banger racer Mike Smith ( #420 at the wheel of the ex-Tim Foxlow/Phil Bell Sierra. From memory this was certainly a race not to be missed.

Mentioning Lightning Rods the day witnessed the most spectacular incident in the formula yet involving the fence hitting and rolling Sierra of Scott Rogers ( #221) which also involved the cars of Andy Watkiss ( #47), Steve Robertson ( #28) and Steve Whitehouse ( #16) who were all following close behind and in hot pursuit.

There were some new cars, drivers and rolls in the ever spectacular Mini Stox formula but in the final outcome it was young Matthew Sayer ( #50) who kept his cool and came out on top in the final after his strong second and third place drives in the heats.

Finally the Bangers and Bombers were entertaining as ever especially with the introduction of the Compact Bombers formula which ended in a very destructive demolition derby.
