Fascinating piece of history - Boscastle really is an amazing place!

Forrabury Common, also known as Forrabury Strips, is an area of 20 hectares containing the best-preserved example of a medieval strip field system in Cornwall, and one of only five actively farmed open strip plots in Britain.

There are now 40 strips, though in 1840 there were 50, and the original number may have exceeded 60. The earliest record of this system is in the Lanhydrock Atlas of 1694, though more recent documentation (eg the Tithe Award) is excellent.

The strips are all approximately 1 acre in area, although may be larger or smaller though amalgamation or subdivision. All show a slight curve. Strips are grouped into seven bundles defined by trackways. Medieval and C17 pottery has been found scattered in the fields.

Brilliant work as ever...thanks to you all, keeping everyone safe.

Last nights training session was timely as whilst out the crew were tasked to assist a kayaker in difficulties at West Pit Bay, south of Boscastle Harbour.

The crew arrived on scene and assessed the situation. The Y-boat was launched and the crew were able to get the kayaker off the rocks and took him to the all-weather lifeboat. Once on board the crew administered first aid for some minor scratches the kayaker had suffered. The kayaker was then taken to Boscastle Harbour and into the care of the Boscastle Coastguard Rescue Team.

The crew returned to the station at 8:27pm.

The kayaker had a number of means of calling for help, including a handheld VHF radio which he used to send out a mayday. We urge all those on the water to ensure that they have a means of calling for help with them. Please visit the RNLI website to find out more about how to enjoy the sea safely.

This is a wonderful place to visit, and now there are sculptures to find too, to add to the enjoyment....

Have you walked the nature trail lately? The carvings and sculptures are now in place, so keep your eyes peeled and see if you can spot them all! You'll have to have your wits about you, as some of them are hiding away in the luscious undergrowth!
We have an activity booklet for your little sprites to work through as you explore the trail, collect the letters and brass rubbings, and take a short break along the way on our cloud watching beds to see what you can make out in the cloud-adorned skies above The Glen.
We're open from 9am-5pm, with last entry to the waterfalls at 4:30pm. Come down, explore this beautiful ancient woodland and experience the magic of St Nectan's Glen.

A favourite walk, Boscastle harbour up to Willapark and beyond as far as you like, then back down to the village for a meal out.....

Willapark (meaning enclosure with a view) is the headland that overlooks Boscastle harbour from the south. The white tower was originally a Georgian holiday home, then used to spot smugglers, and now is occupied by the National Coastwatch Institute. https://riversideboscastle.co.uk/boscastle-cornwall/
