🍂Hello November 🍂

November can be quite a wonderful month here in the Lake District.
Although the days may be shorter, there is still plenty going on and numerous walks to be discovered and enjoyed.
Frosty mornings, crunchy leaves and some spectacular scenery to take in- it’s an ideal time to book a getaway.

_ King of the Fells

Yesterday saw the final journey home for our Cumbrian Legend Joss Naylor.

Joss took up fell running in 1960 and won numerous races and set records through 70’s and 80’s.
In 1986, Joss ran all 214 Wainwrights in seven days (in a heatwave). This sheep farmer broke the Lake District 24-hour record not once, but three times and also went on to run the fastest-known times on the Three Peaks, The Pennine Way and Welsh 3,000’s.
At the age of 60, he ran 60 Lakeland fell-tops in 36 hours and then, at 70, ran 70 Lakeland fells.
Joss continued running into his eighties and in 2019, at the age of 83, he completed a race he had previously dropped out of due to poor weather conditions, more than fifty years earlier.

He created his own fell-running challenge, the Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge, open to over-fifties only. This runs 48 miles (77 km) from Pooley Bridge to Greendale Bridge, traversing 30 summits, with climbing of 17,000 feet.

Josh considered the 72 peak Lakeland circuit as his own greatest achievement, setting a record which stood unbroken for 13 years.

Joss cared passionately about Cumbria and its people and was a patron of the Brathay Trust. He both encouraged and inspired countless individuals within the community and further afield.

It had been Joss’s wish that his funeral should be “a colourful celebration of his life”. Fell runners were encouraged to run over the passes to Wasdale Head to where hundreds of fell running team colours could be seen to lead the cortège in bringing Joss home to St Olaf’s Church, Wasdale (smallest church in England).

_we’re back 👋

Apologies for our absence ☺️

- although we have been busy online answering queries and helping you to choose and reserve your summer vacations in our lovely lakeland cottages 🏡

- we have also been enjoying a much needed (and well deserved break) in another National Park on the other side of the Atlantic 🌊

- from Windermere 🇬🇧 to Windermere 🇨🇦

We have thoroughly enjoyed being a tourist and enjoying the ever so friendly, Canadian hospitality. We explored not one but two National Parks and are now back and busy as the schools begin to break up. ✨

There are still available dates July/Aug with the added bonus of flexible check in days and a minimum 2night stay. 🌿

The Arla Great North Swim is a weekend-long celebration of open water swimming held , Lake Windermere.

With stops just a short walk from each of our cottages, direct to the venue (555/599) and running regular ferries to/from the event, our guests get to leave their cars and not have to worry about parking at this popular well attended event.

2025 Entries are already open 13-15 June if you want to get in early 🏊‍♀️ 🏠

If you’re visiting the this bank holiday (or any other time really) then you should make your first stop (just on the Kendal roundabout after you come off at J36) 🚙

This family run farm shop stocks a wonderful selection of locally sourced produce and has everything you could possibly need for a stay in one of cottages.

You can even pick up freshly made breads, bliss-cuits and croissants from across the yard. Speciality coffee and teas from , pies and pasties (fresh & frozen) from and of course not forgetting some sweet treats

You can also take time for tea and a snack

Then that’s you all set for your lakeland visit, stocked up with lots of local loveliness 🥰

We love reading guests comments following a stay at one of our cottages and although we describe Bluehill Cottage as traditional and cosy, we think ‘cute and sweet’ work too 🥰
