๐ฆ๐ฆWorld Giraffe Day 2024 ๐ฆ๐ฆ
๐Today, June 21st, is the longest day or night of the year (depending on the hemisphere) and it is also a day to celebrate a species with one of the longest necks in the world...none other than the Giraffe!๐ฆ
๐ค Somewhere down the line someone decided that today should also be International Yoga day...however, Giraffes don't quite have the flexibility for Yoga! ๐ง
Sit back, relax, and learn more about the world's tallest mammals! ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ
๐ค Did you know there are four distinct species of giraffe found in Africa !?!
1๏ธโฃ The first species is the Masai giraffe, who inhabit the savanna and woodlands of southern Kenya. They used to be the most abundant giraffe species across the continent, however over the past 30 years their population has sadly more than halved.
2๏ธโฃ The Reticulated giraffe roam northern and eastern Kenya and are the most distinct of all the giraffe species with truly stunning clean markings. They are also part of the Special 5, the five species that are not easily, if at all, commonly seen in other parks in Kenya. The Special 5 comprise of the Grevy's zebra, the Somali ostrich, the gerenuk, the fringed-eared oryx and the reticulated giraffe and the best place to spot them is in Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
3๏ธโฃ The Rothschildโs giraffe, also known as Baringo Giraffes, are really easy to tell apart from other types of giraffe because they have no markings on their lower legs. They're also taller than other giraffe species. This species is found in western and central Kenya, and they also happen to be the resident species of the world-famous Giraffe Manor and you can also visit them on an excursion whilst in Nairobi at the Giraffe Centre.
4๏ธโฃ Finally, the Southern giraffe is probably the most recognisable, and what most of us picture in our minds when we think of the animal. They are now the most abundant of all the giraffe species making up over 50% across the continent. They occur, as their name would suggest in Southern Africa, predominantly found in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa.
๐The best place to see these gentle giants is on a safari across Africa and they are one of the most mesmerising animals to spot, ask my Mum as she was spellbound whilst we were on safari in the Masai Mara in 2014.
๐ฆ Whether you see a head peering over the top of an acacia tree or witness the effortless ease with which they canter across the plains, seeing them in the wild never fails to delight. ๐คฏ
๐ If you are planning a trip to Kenya, I can also organise a visit to the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi where you can feed and interact with the resident Rothschildโs giraffes. If you are brave enough you can even go in for a kiss! ๐
๐ Next door is the iconic Giraffe Manor, voted as one of the most unique hotels in the world where giraffes join you for breakfast! ๐ณ

Apologies to the quality of some of the photos, these are of my own whilst on safari and 10 years ago my phone wasn't as high tech as today ๐ท
