A great walk over on the Crummock Water side. Park on the Lorton to Buttermere Road at Lanthwaite Green. A stiff climb up Whin Ben and then a further climb over Whiteside, eventually reaching Hopegill Head. Descend down an initially steep scramble followed by a more gradual descent to above Lorton. Then a nice gentle walk on sheep tracks back to Lanthwaite Green.

Another great walk to one of the more remote and seldom visited parts of the Northwest Lakes. Langstrath is a lovely valley and the further your go up the valley the more you get a real feeling for wilderness. Check out the route on Komoot.

If you are a keen cyclist, then check out this great route which heads out along the Threlkeld railway trail, heads up a quiet gated road from Scales to Mungrisdale, over Caldbeck Common to Hesket Newmarket before taking in a loop to the north before returning towards Penrith. Stopping off at Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens for coffee and cake before taking in a major climb up to Matterdale End. Great views on the descent back down to Troutbeck of Blencathra and the Northwestern Fells before returning via Threlkeld, Castlerigg Stone Circle and Keswick.

Check out one of our recommended walks around Derwentwater. Best place to park is Great Wood, out the Borrowdale Road. Good spot for lunch or a coffee is The Chalet in Portinscale. We would recommend doing this route clockwise. In high season you can cut the walk short by jumping on one of the lake steamers. Check timetables for details.

Ullock Pike is one of our favourite walks and this view is spectacular and shows it in its full early evening glory.

The Edge - Lake District.

After a day of significant snowfall in Cumbria, I had just enough time to venture out after work on Tuesday evening and capture this sunset from the northernmost Wainwright summit in the Lake District - Binsey. I have always loved the prospect towards Skiddaw from the top, and in particular this intimate view of the ridge leading up to subsidiary summit of Ullock Pike; appropriately named The Edge.

Here, the late evening sunshine illuminated the western flank providing a wonderful contrast to the shadowy eastern contours and therefore highlighting the ridgeline perfectly. I also really liked the undulating foreground which managed to provide some scale with the scattered trees and lone horse dwarfed by the mountainous backdrop.

Wishing the snow would make a comeback but unfortunately looks like it won't be returning for the foreseeable future.

More sad news about the downfall of Jennings with the imminent closure of the Cockermouth Brewery. The days of Jennings Best, Cumberland Ale, Cocker Hoop and Snecklifter appear to be over. We haven’t seen Cocker Hoop for some time and moving the brewing of Cumberland to Burton will be as unpopular and as ruinous for the brand as moving Boddingtons from Strangeways to Cardiff many years ago. Thankfully there are so many great local craft ale breweries across Cumbria and many new bars open to serve them.
Surely Marstons pubs will understand the desire of many locals and tourists alike to drink truly local ales rather than the mass produced generic ales served across the country. Hopefully they will give managers and tenants the freedom to add local guest ales to their offer. Every region of the UK has its own distinctive brews and we need to protect and support local champions. We can help by drinking local.

It has been revealed that Jennings Brewery is set to close next month.
