Craig, the « Super Tusker »
The largest tusker, and oldest Elephant, Craig is 51 years old and live in the Ambolesi region in Kenya.
This week, Angela Hewitt, our client loyalty had the extreme good fortune, this week, to meet him… up close. (photo number 3).

This is a great opportunity to share again the interesting notes of David Yarrow who met him 4 years ago… (photo 1)

« With Tim’s passing in 2020, the responsibility of being the poster child of African elephants has passed to his 50 year’s old cousin Craig. This is no downgrade as Craig’s tusks are huge – his left one in particular.

We know our game in Amboseli and on arrival we already have the KWS and the local Masai on our side. The game is to find Craig at first light and that is not easy as he often moves 5 miles in any direction in a day.
That’s a material amount of acreage in the foothills of Kilimanjaro where bush laden topography makes spotting far harder than in the desert below.

So even with the help of 6 Masai on mopeds, we only tend to find him one day in 3. The good news is that when we do, this colossus is very chilled. With the counsel of both the KWS ranger and my guide Juma Wanyama, I can be 10 feet away from Craig and lying on the ground. This is probably the greatest privilege I have with animal encounters anywhere in the world, but the triangle of trust has evolved over 8 years. We all trust each other and that includes Craig. I guess we earned it.

This portrait of Craig taken 7:40am is the best I can do – there’s not much I would change. The heart pounded a little – it was taken with a wide angle lens and the subject was probably the world’s biggest elephant. Enough said. »

What you missed last week in Borneo ….
PART 2

Why Seeing Borneo’s Rarest Wildlife is
a Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity?

Borneo is home to some of the world’s rarest species, and our 2024 small-group was fortunate to witness incredible wildlife, including the elusive otter civet, one of the rarest creatures on the planet. For most people, this species exists only in documentaries—but here, they saw a mother and her two babies in the wild. This was more than just a thrilling moment; it was a stark reminder of how urgently these ecosystems need protection.

One of the most unforgettable experiences was when the group spent an incredible hour with a herd of 100 Bornean elephants, some coming as close as 1-2 meters from the boat as they swam in the water. These intimate moments with such majestic creatures were truly awe-inspiring.

Equally significant was the sighting of 15 wild orangutans, a species that has been devastated by deforestation and illegal wildlife trade. Seeing these magnificent apes in their natural habitat drove home the importance of conservation. Without continuous efforts, future generations may never get the chance to witness them in the wild.

They also had close encounters with the leopard cat, slow loris and tarsiers. Each species plays a crucial role in Borneo’s delicate ecosystem, and with habitat loss threatening their survival, sightings like these may soon become a rarity.

If you missed this year’s journey, don’t wait— a 2025 trip offers another chance to experience Borneo’s astonishing wildlife while supporting vital conservation efforts.

What you missed last week in Borneo ...
PART 1

The 2024 Borneo expedition with acclaimed wildlife photographer Charlie Ryan was nothing short of extraordinary. As we reflect on the journey, we’re reminded not just of the incredible wildlife we encountered, but of the critical role these species play in our planet’s ecosystem—and how fragile their survival is.

From Sepilok to the Kinabatangan River, Tabin, and Danum, the group had remarkable wildlife sightings, encountering everything from 15 wild orangutans to the critically endangered otter civet. Each sighting was a profound reminder of why these trips matter—not only for the awe-inspiring experiences but for the role they play in protecting these rare and precious species.

Kolmanskop, the Ghost Town in Namibia
Narrated & Photographed by Chris Michel.

« During my flying photo safari for Natural World Safaris, I had the unique opportunity to visit the hauntingly abandoned ghost town of Kolmanskopp.

Nestled in the heart of Namibia’s desolate Namib Desert, this once-thriving diamond mining settlement now lies eerily silent, overtaken by shifting sands and time.

The vast expanse of the desert, with its windswept dunes and crumbling buildings, created an otherworldly atmosphere—equal parts lonely and mesmerizing.

As the sun cast long shadows over the derelict structures, it felt as though the spirits of the past still lingered, telling stories of a bustling town long forgotten.

Leading the group through Kolmanskopp, the interplay of light and shadow was perfect for photography, offering stark contrasts between the decaying remnants of human habitation and the relentless encroachment of nature.
Inside the deserted houses, sand had poured through broken windows and doorways, filling rooms and creating surreal scenes. Each corner held a moment waiting to be captured, from the peeling wallpaper to the elegantly decayed staircases.
The isolation and remoteness of the location intensified the eerie beauty, making it an unforgettable highlight of the safari. » Chris Michel

FOREWORD • TRAVEL IS A GATEWAY TO...

BY WILL BOLSOVER, NWS FOUNDER & CEO

Part 2.

Travel is a gateway and I truly believe this. It is a gateway for each and every individual. It is a gateway for explorers, for families, for couples, for individuals. It is a gateway to knowledge that presents itself in many ways, For me, knowledge takes its form through interactions between one individual and another, through conservation, through photography, and through words.

Travel is a gateway, or a window if you prefer, a window into your own personal aspirations and motivations, your own quest for adventure, your own thirst for education. This is what travel is about and this is what we should not forget.

Travel is not about stepping outside your front door and experiencing the world solely through a Western lens. Travel is about opening one’s mind and remaining receptive to all new experiences, philosophies, peoples and places. Knowledge is wealth beyond value - your own personal wealth. This should be held onto, nurtured, nourished, and used wisely for the betterment of all and for the development of our souls.

As Natural World Safaris develops, and as I develop, I appreciate my own personal journey in travel more and more. My eyes are open to the privilege that my vocation affords me. I realise that I have a chance to make a difference - to myself, to my family, and to the peoples, cultures and communities with which I interact. Travel is a privilege, one which we must all develop and learn from. At its best, travel can serve as a focal point for your own personal journey and quest for knowledge. Travel affords me access to business and development opportunities, to inspirational conservation organisations, and ways to connect people with the natural world - a world which we are all a part of.

We hope to see you out there on the road one of these days.

Safe travels,

Will B.

FOREWORD • TRAVEL IS A GATEWAY TO...

BY WILL BOLSOVER, NWS FOUNDER & CEO

Travel is a gateway... or at least it used to be. In our modern world of immediate gratification, travel is becoming less and less the catalyst for personal growth that it used to be and more and more a means to an end. Travel is too often used as a vehicle for social media self-promotion, or a way to impose Western prejudices onto the Third World.

In my humble opinion, this is an ever-expanding issue and one that is only contributing to false expectations, misguided opinions and ultimately disappointment for the traveller. We stand today at a crossroads, one where we must examine our relationship with travel.

Why did we travel in the first place?
What did we want?
What did we expect?

Such goals can only be achieved through access, however.
Think about it - access is privilege, yet in the Western world, we take it for granted.
Thanks to the lightning-fast pace of technological innovation, access is assumed to be a given, and thus never truly appreciated.
Global flight networks, communication networks, the worldwide web; all of these have contributed to, and at the same time undermined, the very concept of travel.

In this ever-advancing world of technology, we need to turn the clocks back - and not the digital ones!

We need to return to our roots.
We need to explore.
We need to discover.
We need to set aside our manicured and sanitised image of the “perfect world” broadcast to us through so many media outlets, and truly travel for travel’s sake.

Yes, we can do this in ultra-luxury or at the very frontier, both are equally valid, but it is the motivation that needs to be right. If this motivation is right from the outset, then travel and enjoy.
