University of Sussex Alumni Network Our mission is to keep you connected to the University through the alumni network. We’re the Alumni Relations Team at the University of Sussex. That’s us!

You know that e-newsletter that appears in your inbox once a month and the lovely Falmer magazine which pops through your letterbox? We try to keep in touch with as many Sussex alumni as possible, making sure that you still feel part of the Sussex community. We want to let you know what’s happening in and around the University and make you aware of events in Brighton, London and many other parts o

f the world. It’s also important to us that we know what you want to hear about and what we can do to make being a Sussex alumni rewarding, fun and stimulating. So keep an eye out for surveys and competitions and other interesting things. We also raise money to support current students who find themselves in hardship and to help improve the student experience. Anyway, that’s enough about us. Stay in touch!

Sussex recently hosted their annual Holocaust Memorial Day event, this year featuring testimony from Holocaust survivor Peter Summerfield BEM. This was followed by a film screening discussion.

We were honoured to welcome Peter to Sussex and he gave an incredibly moving testimony, sharing photos of his family and documentation about his experiences.

"What we do in space really is for the benefit of Earth." 🌏🚀

We love this interview with Sussex alumna and astronaut-in-training, Dr Rosemary Coogan. Born in Northern Ireland, Rosemary spent her early years on our campus, where she lived with her parents while they were studying at the University. She then returned to complete a PhD in astrophysics in 2019.

Now, as the UK’s third ever astronaut in space and the European Space Agency’s first female UK astronaut, she tells the BBC what space training is like and why the work she does as a scientist in space is so important. 👇

At Sussex, we believe that background should never be a barrier to education or success. Meet Jake, a Foundation Year and care-experienced student, who explains about the support he has received at Sussex, and the difference it has made to him: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/alumni/support/news?id=67104

Our comprehensive support system for care leaver students helps them to thrive both academically and personally - but this is only possible thanks to donations to the Sussex Fund, and support from the Rudd Family Foundation.

If you would like to support care-experienced students at Sussex, please consider donating to the Sussex Fund: https://app.forumm.to/donation/sussexfund

Meet Sussex alumnus Chan Tze Woon, a writer and documentary film director. Tze Woon came to study at Sussex as an exchange student in 2009 and his time at Sussex actually influenced him to change his career trajectory and pursue filmmaking.

He recently returned to Sussex for a screening of his latest documentary, Blue Island (2022), with Q&A at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts as part of the Brighton CINECITY festival. In his Spotlight On interview he discusses his experience at Sussex and what drew him to documentary filmmaking: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/alumni/people/spotlighton/chan-tze-woon
