Have you ever dreamed about campus?
We're throwing it back today to the Hallucination Machine, which combined Google’s Deep Dream algorithm, which is an artificial neural network that finds and enhances patterns in images, together with a virtual reality headset with 360-degree panoramic video of pre-recorded natural scenes (like this one of campus!).
The experience stimulates the visual hallucinatory aspects of a psychedelic ‘trip’. Anyone who puts on the headset is soon experiencing a weird world in which vivid hallucinations of dogs, cars and peacocks appear in the sky, on buildings, on humans – in fact, all over the panoramic view.

Next week is #NationalCodingWeek and we’re spotlighting research from Sussex AI which is using artificial intelligence for the good of humanity.
As an example, our researchers have been collaborating with a company that’s developing a mental health app for social media users. By monitoring the language of posts, the app aims to identify young people who are struggling.
Julie Weeds, Co-Director of Sussex AI, said "we need to make sure that we understand what AI is and how it is being used to make decisions. It’s about understanding how to use it in a way that benefits everybody, being part of it, rather than letting it scare you."
“It’s critical to keep human experts in the loop, so rather than replacing us, AI is there to support us.”
Researchers from across our university are working on challenges that will advance the wellbeing of both people and planet, built on a belief that any challenge is only #impossibleuntildone: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/research/impossible-until-done
Can you explain the mystery of consciousness? 🧠

The sun is starting to shine in Brighton ☀️ - now is the perfect time to explore the beautiful landscapes that surround our stunning campus. 🌿
To make the most of the weather, we partially followed the campus Boundary Walk waymarked route (the great part of the walk is that you can always customise it!) and explored the wonders of nature.
The Boundary Walk is also the perfect addition to a visit back to campus (and perhaps a reunion of your uni friends) - contact us at [email protected] for further advice and assistance on organising your own alumni reunion!
Wishing all our alumni and friends a Happy Lunar New Year, as we begin the Year of the Dragon 🐉
