The University of Sussex and nanotechnology company Advanced Material Development Ltd (AMD) have this summer sealed a new 10-year strategic partnership, which will see the development and commercialisation of nanomaterial inks and coatings for both consumer and industry products.

The coatings being developed at Sussex have novel electrical, thermal or optical properties, enabling new designs of electric vehicles, wind turbines and ‘smart windows’, among other applications:

AMD's 10-year investment cements a long-term partnership with the University seeing the development and commercialisation of nanomaterial coatings.

Every year, August 21 is World Entrepreneurs’ Day – a day to celebrate entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership.

We're proud to count many entrepreneurs amongst our Sussex alumni, including alum Theo Maloney, the founder of Just Add Rum (JAR).

His London-based startup creates and sells a fruit-based mixer to which, as the company’s name cleverly communicates, customers need only to add their favourite rum to enjoy: https://www.sussex.ac.uk/alumni/people/spotlighton/theo-maloney

We are excited to announce that Sussex is taking part in the shared-reading scheme, the Big Read! 📚

Award-winning TV anchor and Sussex alumnus Clive Myrie is the author featured in the scheme with his Sunday Times best-selling memoir Everything is Everything.

The Big Read brings students, staff and alumni together through the shared experience of reading, providing a common talking point for the whole Sussex community.

As part of the Big Read a series of seminars are taking place that draw on the themes of Clive’s book. The seminars are taking place every Wednesday, starting tomorrow, 21 August – 18 September and can be enjoyed even by those who have not yet read Everything is Everything.

Join in the discussions and share the experience with your Sussex community by picking up a copy of Everything is Everything from your local bookseller: https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/clive-myrie/everything-is-everything/9781399715003/

"The world should redouble its efforts on the SDGs, not abandon them."

With 2030 around the corner, what's next for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Dr. Benjamin K. Sovacool, Director of the Bennett Institute for Innovation and Policy Acceleration at Sussex, alongside colleagues at other institutions, has written in Nature about how to progress the United Nations’ agenda towards 2050:

The world should redouble its efforts on the SDGs, not abandon them. Here’s how to progress the United Nations’ agenda towards 2050.

We were saddened to hear that Dr Sabina Avdagic passed away earlier this year.

In 2006, Sabina came to Sussex as a Research Councils UK (RCUK) Fellow which converted into a full lectureship in the Department of Politics. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Politics at Sussex in 2014 and then to Reader in Political Economy in 2021.

While at Sussex, Sabina taught across a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and was widely respected by her students.

Read more about Sabina:

Sabina Avdagic was born and grew up in Bosanska Dubica in Bosnia-Herzegovina (which, during her childhood, was part of Yugoslavia) in 1973.
