The Secret of Samhain

Long ago, in the ancient lands of the Celts, there was a single night each year when the veil between the world of the living and the world of spirits was at its thinnest. This night was called Samhain (pronounced “Sow-en”), marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark, cold winter—a time that was often associated with death.
As the legend goes, the druids, who were mystical leaders of the Celtic people, would gather on the hilltops each Samhain night, dressed in black cloaks and carrying lanterns made from hollowed-out turnips with twisted, eerie faces carved into them. These lanterns, they believed, would ward off any spirits who meant harm.

However, among the good spirits were also dark ones—restless souls that roamed the earth with unfinished business. People feared these spirits might sneak into their homes and haunt them through the cold winter. To avoid being recognized by these malevolent spirits, villagers would wear masks and costumes, blending in with the ghostly beings who walked among them.

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

In the UK, pancake races form an important part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations. The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now world famous. Competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf.

Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26th in the UK, has historical roots where servants, who worked on Christmas Day in affluent households, were granted the following day off. On this day, they would carry boxes of gifts home for their families. The name "Boxing Day" is derived from the tradition of people walking the streets with these gift boxes. In earlier times, children received presents on December 26th.
