"I had a wonderful experience of visiting the rock churches in Ethiopia on pilgrimage to Lalibela in 2019 with Tadele Travel. The places we stayed at were comfortable, the food interesting and delicious and the tour was varied and fabulous. I loved travelling through different landscapes as we travelled through the country by coach, the people are beautiful, generous and kind, open hearted. I am so glad I went as it was a truly wonderful experience. I recommend Tadele Travel most highly, and Girma was great at seeing to our needs. As a local who has lived in the UK for many years, he understands UK culture but also has loads if solid contacts, friends and associates in Ethiopia, so the experience is probably one of the best you could have if you want to experience authentic Ethiopia. Today is Timket, which marks Epiphany and the baptism of Jesus Christ. It is one of our favourite religious festivals. We celebrate the event in Lalibela, where the festival itself took its present form originally. In the 1170s AD, King Lalibela decided that all churches should travel out of their compound to celebrate the baptism by the riverside. He himself selected the "Timkete Bahir" (the pond for the baptism) and prepared the “Tabot Maderia” (the place where the replica of the Arc of the covenant rests overnight). Since that time, the journey from each Ethiopian Orthodox church to the Timkete Bahir has been a beautiful religious spectacle. We, team Tadele Travel in the UK, can smell the dust, hear the heavenly sounds, see the dramatic colours and feel the sun's warmth on our skin. We look forward to next year, when we can celebrate it with our clients and the local team in Lalibela. Happy Timket to you all!
