New Year is acknowledged all over the world in so many ways. The night's sky explodes with colour in firework displays everywhere from Copacabana beach in Brazil to high above Scotland's Edinburgh Castle. Meanwhile, the Danes will be smashing plates on each others doorsteps for luck, in Japan there's a chorus of bells, and in Spain you'll find locals reaching for grapes - 12 grapes bring you 12 lucky months!

How do you celebrate New Year?

A Passage to India: India. This classic 1984 movie is set on the famous E.M Forster novel, and depicts the multi-layered landscapes of colonial-era India. Filming took place in beautiful Indian locations such as Jaipur, known for its iconic pink architecture, and the lush backdrops of Bangalore.

At Eternity's Gate: France. Telling the story of Vincent Van Gogh's final years in the South of France, this 2018 film takes place in and around Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The film emphasizes the stunning Provençal landscape, with its golden fields, cypress trees, and lavender-covered hills, reflecting the very scenes that inspired Van Gogh's masterpieces.

Lord of the Rings: New Zealand. These movies (2001-03) based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novels were responsible for a huge boon in New Zealand's tourism! The country's spectacular landscapes - from the rolling green hills of Matamata (Hobbiton) to the dramatic mountain ranges of Queenstown (Misty Mountains) and the majestic Fiordland National Park (Fangorn Forest) all formed the magical backdrop for 'Middle Earth' in this iconic cinematic trilogy.

If you seek something different for your next trip, you can't beat the pleasing diversity of the Baltics. Sitting on one of Europe’s chilliest oceans, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania hold a unique cultural quality that make them distinct from neighbouring countries - and from each other. Here's why we can't get enough of the Baltics...

Estonia's capital, Tallinn - Tallinn is a dynamic and walkable city, awash with streets of brightly-painted buildings, a progressive cafe culture and intriguing museums - finally bringing Estonia the attention it deserves. On a city break you can stop in at breezy wine bars, admire medieval remnants as well as intuitively designed architecture, and indulge in the burgeoning food scene.

Latvia's untouched wilderness - The middle Baltic nation has abundant natural scenery to brag about, 50% of its landmass is relatively untouched wilderness. Despite this, nature-loving travellers don’t gather here as they do in other destinations; and for many, this is the crux of its appeal. Hikers can embark on fresh walking trails without the usual crowds.

Lithuania's quirks and legends - The southernmost Baltic state is crammed with nature, spiritedness and sites of fascinating mythical folklore. The capital, Vilnius, is compact yet full of energy, with a gorgeous Baroque Old Town alongside a melee of Gothic, Rococo and Neoclassical buildings.

If you're as intrigued as we are by these underrated nations, you'll love our article on Exploring the Baltics >> https://www.travellocal.com/en/articles/exploring-the-baltics-gems-of-estonia-lithuania-and-latvia-2

We're big on making sustainable choices here at TravelLocal, and put local life at the heart of everything we do. If you're keen to travel in this way, the following destinations make it easy to do so, by leading the way in local-minded tourism...

Valencia, Spain - As European Green Capital 2024, the dynamic Spanish city of Valencia is making big moves for sustainability. Much of this is down to its green spaces and commitment to alternative modes of transport. It's a very cyclable city and a joy to explore.

Helsinki, Finland - Helsinki is one of the greenest capitals in the world, with much of its energy sourced from renewable sources. Its public transport runs on biofuels, and many restaurants use locally-sourced produce as part of Finland's love of foraging and seasonal eating.

Montreal, Canada - Montreal has been ranked the top city in North America for its commitment to sustainability. There are cycle schemes, eco-festivals and lots of green areas for locals in the heart of the city, such as Mount Royal Park and the Botanical Gardens. It's a city awash with community gardens and eco-friendly designs.

As the winter season has truly set in and the air is getting chilly, it's time to look ahead to some incredible trips for next year. We've just released our 'Where to Go in 2025' guide, and here are just three of the destinations we're excited about!

- Discover Indonesia’s Hidden Gems. Beyond Bali and Java, Indonesia offers over 17,000 islands. Sumba is a paradise for surfers and beach lovers, while Flores features coral reefs and is close to Komodo, home of the famous dragons. The Gili Islands each offer something special—Trawangan’s nightlife, Meno’s snorkeling, and Gili Air’s tranquility.

- Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos. There are over 170 'magic towns' in Mexico, designated so for their uniqueness, heritage and beauty. They are scattered all over the nation, from Paracho de Verduzco, Michoacán, where you can marvel at handcrafted guitars; to Palizada, Campeche, famed for its local theatre and music.

- Latvia. This fascinating Eastern European nation is so underrated. Riga, the capital, is more than 800 years old, boasting a blend of medieval historical sites, local music performances and UNESCO-protected Art Nouveau buildings.

The Middle East and North Africa can easily be defined as one of the oldest places on Earth. Often described as the cradle of civilization, the sites of historic and cultural value that exist here have been luring curious travellers for centuries. Here are just three of its most profound UNESCO sites

- Petra, Jordan. The rock-carved ‘Rose City’ that became the symbol of Jordan, Petra is an iconic archaeological site built and designed by the Nabataeans in the 2nd century BC. Its most recognisable facade is its stunning rose-hued Treasury, which emerges at the end of a winding desert cavern.
- Wadi Al-Hitan (The Valley of the Whales), Egypt. Out in the Egyptian desert lies the enormous fossils of legged whales (basilosaurus and dorudon species) thought to be around 40 million years old. This paleontological discovery is our most prominent evidence that whales evolved from land-dwellers.
- Land of Frankincense, Oman. Frankincense was historically Oman’s biggest trade. To honour ‘one of the most important luxury items in the Old World in Antiquity’, four fascinating sites across Oman are UNESCO protected: the harbours where it was exchanged with international traders; the Oasis of Shisr, where traders collected water before traversing dangerous desert routes with frankincense; and the source of the frankincense tree itself, Wadi Dawkah.
