As the winter season has truly set in and the air is getting chilly, it's time to look ahead to some incredible trips for next year. We've just released our 'Where to Go in 2025' guide, and here are just three of the destinations we're excited about!

- Discover Indonesia’s Hidden Gems. Beyond Bali and Java, Indonesia offers over 17,000 islands. Sumba is a paradise for surfers and beach lovers, while Flores features coral reefs and is close to Komodo, home of the famous dragons. The Gili Islands each offer something special—Trawangan’s nightlife, Meno’s snorkeling, and Gili Air’s tranquility.

- Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos. There are over 170 'magic towns' in Mexico, designated so for their uniqueness, heritage and beauty. They are scattered all over the nation, from Paracho de Verduzco, Michoacán, where you can marvel at handcrafted guitars; to Palizada, Campeche, famed for its local theatre and music.

- Latvia. This fascinating Eastern European nation is so underrated. Riga, the capital, is more than 800 years old, boasting a blend of medieval historical sites, local music performances and UNESCO-protected Art Nouveau buildings.

The Middle East and North Africa can easily be defined as one of the oldest places on Earth. Often described as the cradle of civilization, the sites of historic and cultural value that exist here have been luring curious travellers for centuries. Here are just three of its most profound UNESCO sites

- Petra, Jordan. The rock-carved ‘Rose City’ that became the symbol of Jordan, Petra is an iconic archaeological site built and designed by the Nabataeans in the 2nd century BC. Its most recognisable facade is its stunning rose-hued Treasury, which emerges at the end of a winding desert cavern.
- Wadi Al-Hitan (The Valley of the Whales), Egypt. Out in the Egyptian desert lies the enormous fossils of legged whales (basilosaurus and dorudon species) thought to be around 40 million years old. This paleontological discovery is our most prominent evidence that whales evolved from land-dwellers.
- Land of Frankincense, Oman. Frankincense was historically Oman’s biggest trade. To honour ‘one of the most important luxury items in the Old World in Antiquity’, four fascinating sites across Oman are UNESCO protected: the harbours where it was exchanged with international traders; the Oasis of Shisr, where traders collected water before traversing dangerous desert routes with frankincense; and the source of the frankincense tree itself, Wadi Dawkah.

Travel isn't only a way a means to learn about other peoples and cultures, but of getting to know yourself, too. Have you ever considered a trip to track your family ancestry? They're becoming ever more popular, and with the help of a local travel expert, you could make your own heritage trip.

- Genealogy travel, also known as heritage travel, involves visiting places connected to your family’s history and ancestry. It's a deeply personal journey where travellers explore their roots, tracking ancestral hometowns and historical sites, to better understand their family's past.
- Sometimes, they're a way to reconnect with your heritage and immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of your homeland. By engaging with local communities and participating in traditional activities, you can foster a relationship with your sense of history and self.
- Consider keeping a journal, collecting mementos and documenting your experiences. Use the help of a local operator - like our locally-based TravelLocal experts - who can help you plan an itinerary and be on hand for logistical support.

Man's archeological achievements never cease to fascinate - offering illuminating clues into how we lived and honoured our deities in centuries past. Here are some of the best archeological sites from around the world...

- Chichén Itzá, Mexico. These jungle-shrouded pyramids tell us some of the most intricate stories about the ancient Mayan civilisation. Discovered in Yucutan, this collection of ruins was built by the Mayans between AD 750 and 900, and was once home to around 35,000 people who cultivated the region's first crops.
- Petra, Jordan. A lost city in a remote desert valley, Petra dates back to the 3rd century BC and was the capital of the Nabataean empire. Nothing beats wandering down the winding gorge as the iconic rose-stone facade of the Treasury comes into view .
- Angkor Wat, Cambodia. Dating back to the 12th century, this Hindu-Buddhist temple complex is the symbol of Cambodia - one of South East Asia’s most famous archaeological attractions and one of its most beautiful and mystical.

- Alexandria. Famous for its lost library, this artful city was founded over 2,350 years ago. It's still Egypt's major port, home to a remarkable national museum which showcases fine artefacts dating back to the Pharaohs.
- The Red Sea. A scuba-diver's dream, the Red Sea coast is one of the world's best diving destinations, full of resplendent marine life bursting with colour among the coral. If you're not a diver, the beaches alone are a stunning diversion.

Nestled in the heart of South America, Bolivia is a country of stunning contrasts. From the Andes to the Amazon, it offers unparalleled and diverse exploration - whether you seek to wander its vibrant cities, learn about its indigenous culture, or immerse yourself in pristine natural wonders. Here are just three reasons why Bolivia is a must-visit:

- Unbelievable natural landscapes. The natural world takes centre stage in Bolivia. One day you'll be awe-struck at the world’s largest salt flats at the Salar de Uyuni; in the next few days, admiring the towering volcanoes and Andean peaks near sprawling Lake Titicaca.
- Colour-drenched festivals. Dive into the flamboyant celebrations of Bolivia, from the authentic Urkupiña celebrations in August to February's Mardi Gras - for a whirlwind of musical parades and brilliant parties.
- Getting off-the-beaten-path. So much of this sparsely populated land feels off-the-beaten-track, from hiking in the mountains of the Cordillera Real or horseback riding through Bolivia’s southern canyons near Tupiza. Tour the Jesuit missions of remote Chiquitania for a glimpse of niche Bolivian history.

And there's much more where that came from. Lose yourself in daydreams of South America, with our Beginner's Guide for Bolivia >> https://www.travellocal.com/en/articles/a-beginners-guide-to-bolivia

Prambanan & Borobudur Temple, Indonesia. "A magical way to start the day is a bike ride to a nearby hilltop - in time to watch the sunrise unveil the pinnacle of Borobudur Temple, complete with gently smoking volcano in the background." - Cliff.

Shkodra, Albania. "Shkodra's natural beauty is remarkable. Having visited numerous times, I have consistently appreciated the warm hospitality of its people and unique culture. Known as the city of bikes, it's also amazing to explore on two wheels." - Sinan.
