On Sunday, our 50th call-out of the year involved a young male who got caught in a rip current and was dragged out to sea. Thankfully, he knew the Float to Live safety advice and called for help until assistance came.
As many of you may know, rip currents in the Bude area have led to multiple incidents over the past few weeks. Below we have some helpful safety advice for anyone who enjoys the sea:
☞ Visit a beach with RNLI Lifeguards present.
☞ Tell friends or family that you’re heading into the water. Give them an approximate time to expect you back.
☞ If you get caught in a rip current, do not try to swim against it. Stay as calm as possible and control your breathing.
☞ Remember to FLOAT TO LIVE: https://rnli.org/safety/float - if you have a surfboard or bodyboard, hold onto that.
☞ Raise your hand and shout for help.
☞ If for any reason you can’t get help, try and swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of trouble, then swim to the shore.
☞ If you can stand up, wade instead of swimming.
☞ If you see anyone in trouble in the sea, dial 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD.
