Wow what a difference from last year, it’s nice to see the fruits of your labour. Wild flower meadows are being trialled as I’ve never done one before. Most of the land has been levelled, top dressed, over seeded so the lawn mower doesn’t think it’s on a BMX track. It’s nice to see green rather than mud. It won’t be long before the landscaping is complete. Thank you everyone that has shared, followed, liked and invited friends to watch the progress xx

Hi everyone. Please feel free to share our posts so we can hit the ground running, when we open to guests later this year. It’s a massive undertaking for us, I’m giving up weekends and most of my spare time to see if I can complete a dream…now I have started it😁

October 2023

In October we finished the walls, patios, paths and parking around the 3rd and 4th holiday lets.

We had a good tidy up on the site and finished dressing the landscape ready for winter months.

We will have a well-earned rest over the winter months.

Its nice to look back on past posts to see what Adam, Logan, Brooke me achieved over the year while still running www.s-richards.co.uk

We cant wait to make a start on building the holiday homes in spring next year, knowing we achieved getting all of the work done below ground level and landscaping the land.

September 2023

In September we managed to get one side of the landscaping completed and ready to sow the wild meadow flowers and lawns.

No more mud on 😊and looking forward to nature doing its bit.

We started to get organised on the 3rd and 4th holiday lets.

Logan went tree climbing.

The project hasn’t broken me yet and the tan has improved, it’s very peaceful here, nice, warm and stress free in the fresh air.

I do enjoy the vast skies here and watching the seasons change the landscape.

We managed to nearly complete the walls on the 3rd and 4th holiday lets.

Logan and Brooke helped plant some of the Silver Birch saplings along the path.

We tidied up the entrance as a tidy ship is a happy ship.

August 2023

In August we concentrated on getting the first 2 Holiday lets bricked up to damp course level, we have not done much bricklaying before, we don’t think it turned out to bad.

We completed some of the drainage pipe work on one half of the airfield, back filled some of the trenches and levelled off some of the meadows.

We laid the path linking up two of the holiday lets and completed two of the patios.

We had a lovely visit from the Red Arrows who made a love heart just above us.

June 2023

What a scorcher of a month June was with loads of hot weather and sunshine.

We carried on with the sole purpose of getting as much as possible done on the ground works, paths, and parking. It’s nice to see a dream slowly come true.

We laid the curved path and started to dress the soil levelling and raking as we go.

We regularly see all kinds of aircraft here, light aircraft from the local airfield just a stone’s throw away, bombers, Apache helicopters and the red arrows drawing a massive love heart just above us.

To entertain Logan & Brooke I mowed a maze into the meadow and hid objects in them to find. This may be implemented into the final meadows when the holiday Homes are built for guest’s entertainment.

On a nice summers day its lovely to fly kites here.

We made good progress with the patio edging, carpark, drainage and found a locket.

Taking up one of the hard standings was hard going as the concrete was rather strong and thick, it was crushed and upcycled into the final part of the carpark base which is now thankfully completed.

Sometimes it pays to be observant to the local flora because after spending money on some Hazelnut trees you then discover the original hedge row has plenty.

We carried out soil sampling in preparation for laying the mains water pipe work.

May 2023
During May, another hot month, it was a quiet month for the Airfield, we had a few customers we had to help with Home Improvements.

Logan & Brooke had a go at building work and designed and built their rabbit home, I’m not too sure Bugs Bunny approved. We played on the trampoline and had some family time 😊

I decided to break up the concrete bolder that was blocking the entrance when we bought the site, 4 hours and it was done and upcycled into the parking area hardcore.

Brooke gave me a hand stacking out bricks.

We got a small section of the car park finished and out of the mud.

April 2023 It’s nice to be in the sunshine and fresh air.

During April we spent the beginning of the month, marking and digging out for the paths and carpark.

We laid our very first brick….just 7999 more bricks and blocks to go.
We hand mixed all the 200 mm deep foundations for the 330 meters of path parking and patio edging.

Then laid the edging (slowly taming the area so we can get out of the mud)

Back filling the first bit of the path with gravel was a great milestone to hit and knowing just that tiny bit is finished.

We bought some year-old Silver Birch, Walnut, Hazelnut, Cherry Plum trees saplings, and some more established Silver Birch, Apple and Pear trees.

The biggest problem we had was having to work around the Gravel that had to be unloaded in the wrong spot due to the delivery lorry getting stuck in the mud…..lesson learnt.

The first section of car park was finished and last section of double-edged paths was laid.

We planted our first Apple and Cherry Plum tree only to return the following morning to discover Bugs Bunny had had a nice meal.

We found what we believe to be a serviette ring within the soil (not sure if it’s from the Second World War).

Logan and Brooke inspected the work we had done from various viewpoints.

We got a cracking action shot of our friend Woody.

We dug out and laid our first bits of mains water and drainage pipework.
We are so looking forward to being out of the mud. 😊

March 2023. I hate mud:) Spring is well and truly on its way.

This month we spent the time updating ourselves on building regs so we could apply them to the drawings and there is still a lot of reading to do.

We carried on with the access to the site. We got attacked by all the local killer triffids and some of them hurt a wee bit especially the Black Thorn.

Brooke and Logan worked out what they wanted from The Great Escape Holiday Homes and by the look of things we are going to be building a golf course and brick-built furniture.

We went treasure hunting and we found some items while digging the car park out. Brooke started the entrance flower beds.

We had a lovely visit from Susan, Karen, John and Jeff relatives from some of the USA armed forces that served on the airfield during WW2

We got stuck again and so did one of the delivery lorries.

We done some major flora relocation. Our main objective was to do as much digging as we possibly could while we had the machinery on hire for the week.

The glorious month of February, spring is on its way and summer won’t be far away.

One of the best aspects of the location is the endless sky’s which are absolutely great for photos.

We have an abundance of local wildlife that are happy to pop in and pay a visit while we work or rest.

The fencing is carrying on being done and so are we as every post takes between 12-18 hits with the post wacker ☹I’m hoping I will have arms like Arnie by the time it’s done.

We regularly have visits from the local UK Army/Navy/Raf in there helicopters…..not sure what type of helicopter they are.

During the cold months of the year we had to deal with the problem of getting the building regs put on the original architects drawings for building control…..the cost was rather expensive so we decided to undertake the process ourselves by learning how to do it using the new version of Autocad and redrawing the plans so we could apply building regs to the drawings. We came across a company called buildingregs4u online, it’s really easy if you are going to create your own drawing. plus saves a good few quid. It’s definitely been a learning curve mixing aesthetics while maintaining sensible construction techniques.

During one tea break we decided to visit the local historical town of Lavenham….(we highly recommend visiting the local butchers to try the hog roast sausage rolls and scotch eggs. There's a lot to see and the local pub has historical messages/memories from world wart 2…. It’s quite poignant to look at all the pictures and makes your mind run wild looking at all the names of the aircrew that visited the pub.
