Have you read our latest post on conversation around what’s a summer or autumn salmon yet? 🐟 There's more to these fish than meets the eye - timing, colour, and behaviour all varying, but our language around them is changing too.

Whether you're reeling in a silver beauty or an angry autumn fighter, there's a lot to consider.

06/09/2024

We don't think it's really stopped raining! Last week much of Scotland had large amounts of rain which brought up a lot of our rivers. This curtailed the sport slightly as rivers were up and down throughout the week. This week hasn't been any different with a large band of rain sweeping across the country bringing rivers up. However, it looks like most rivers are now steady or dropping which is good news to us fisher folk.

There isn't much rain forecast until the end of next week and that will probably change so rivers should continue to drop and fishing should be good. There have been reports of fresh running fish seen and caught which does make us optimistic for the run to carry on for another couple of weeks. Fingers crossed! Fish are well spread out through our river systems so head out and try to catch the very special fish that is the Atlantic Salmon.

I'll keep on saying it but, look after your catch. Don't net it and immediately take it out of the water on to the bank. Leave it in the water so it can get its breath back. Handle the fish with wet hands and be sympathetic when removing the hook. Make sure that the fish is ready before you release it, so it has the best chance of spawning and we can continue to head out and fish for these amazing creatures.

Beats to try in the next couple of weeks;

Stay updated with FishPal's latest fishing reports from across the UK! As autumn sets in, the River Dee reported over 80 salmon and 30 sea trout this week, including a notable 26lb salmon from Tilbouries. The Annan, rejuvenated by recent spates, promises a strong season end, highlighted by catches from Graham Southam and Adrian Parr.

The Angus Esks enjoyed productive fishing thanks to cool, rainy weather, with Canterland on the North Esk recording 17 salmon/grilse in a single day. The River Tay continues to impress with over 300 salmon caught last week, providing excellent prospects as we head into the peak months.

On the Tweed, 317 salmon were reported, with potential totals reaching 450 when including unreported beats. The Aberdeenshire Don, despite nearing summer lows, saw increased activity, including a 25lb catch at Kintore AC, thanks to recent rains.

The first week of September looks very mild, with temperatures hitting the high teens in many places. Following a yellow weather warning for rain last week, rivers have been topped up once again and some consistent, steady weather has provided great conditions for angling. As we approach the final stages of the season, many anglers will turn to fishing slightly deeper with intermediate or sinking lines, and fly patterns such as PBP’s, Francis’, and Snaelda’s being very popular.

There is some excellent availability on the website for those planning a last-minute trip. Lower Crathes West Durris on the river Dee, is situated below Banchory on the lower river. The beat boats numerous, excellent holding pools which can be fished in various water heights.
https://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Dee/LowerCrathesWDurris/

On the Tay system, Beat 2 on the river Tilt is worth fishing; keep an eye on river levels over the next week or two as it will fish well when dropping following rainfall. It can often through up a big fish or 2! https://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Tay/RiverTiltBeat2/

On the Spey, Castle Grant 2 has limited availability over the next 2 weeks. The beat has excellent access, and offers some exceptional water to swing a fly.
https://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Spey/CastleGrant2/

And finally, on Tweed, Tillmouth has some last minute availability for late September. The lower Tweed has fished very well in recent weeks and it is shaping up to be an excellent end to the season.

More rain! 🌧️

The wet summer continues which I'm sure is pleasing to all of you reading this. Earlier this week, Scotland was drenched which has given all our rivers a major top up. As I write this the Findhorn is sitting at a lovely height, the Tay has come up around 2ft, the Tweed has more water and many more rivers do.

The run of fish is continuing which really is good news. Now that water levels have come up we'll hopefully see more fresh fish running but also the resident fish will be on the take. Looking ahead, there is more rain forecast so hopefully fishing continues to be productive.

Now that we're most of the way through the season, fish will be spread out through out river systems, so get out there and fling a fly in the water! Beats to try over the next couple of weeks. Tight lines to you all!

More rain on the way!

With cooler temperatures and with a couple bands of significant rain to push down through North West Scotland and into Central Scotland and Northern England. This should hopefully promote more fish to run and for fish already in our rivers to be active. Sadly we're running out of time this season, but with an encouraging head of fish in most of our rivers the next couple of months could continue to offer good sport. Could we see a back end run? Unlikely, although we can still hope for the return of our silver Autumn fish to return. Remember as we get closer to spawning time, that these fish have travelled thousands of miles, haven't fed and are losing condition so fish care is imperative. Handle the fish with wet hands and if you want a photo of your catch, lift the fish out the water for a matter of seconds. Tight lines!
