Many pass by Dunseverick Castle unaware of the importance it played in ancient Ireland, the scant remains we see today are relatively modern in comparison (16th century). There is nothing visual to unlock the significance of the site apart from our own imagination and knowledge.

Dunseverick means Dun (Fort) Severick (Sobhairce).

Sobhairce and his brother Cearmna Finn, according to the 'Annals of the Four Masters', were descendants of the Milesians, a race of people who came to Ireland from Iberia (Spain) in circa 1400BC. The two brothers ruled Ireland in circa 1150BC and established two strategic forts to do so. Sobhairce was based at Dun Sobhairce and Cearmna Finn at Dun Cearmna near Kinsale in County Cork.

They were both eventually slain in conflict, Sobhairce at Dunseverick and Cearmna Finn near Dun Cearmna , Kinsale.

Another interesting connection relates to one of the great roads that fanned out from Tara in County Meath, there were five roads in total and one of these came here to Dunseverick.

The Slige Midluachra (The Northern Road) went first to Slane, Dundalk, Slieve Fuaid (NewtownHamilton), Navan (Emain -Macha) and then to Dunseverick. It may have come to where Bushmills is today with a branch going to Lissanduff at Portballintrae and the main road going to Dunseverick. We have a reference to a great road in Portballintrae. Ballaghmore Road or the first part, Ballaghmore. Bealach (road ) and Mor (big or great).

Dunseverick is a fascinating location whose history could fill many books.
