So it's another rainy day in the Peak District. We're best known for being an outdoors destination but there are still plenty of things to do indoors

The 2024 summer weather is letting us down. There are still things to do in the Peak District in the rain, however. Some ideas to inspire you

I’m really pleased with the refurbished kitchen cupboard doors for the Byre Cottage (and even more pleased that I’ve got them all back on!)
Looking forward to welcoming guests back again tomorrow 🥰

Did you know? ….

Winter at Winnats Pass ❄️⛰️ Did you know, the name ‘Winnats’ comes from ‘Windy Gates’ because this is one of the windier entrances into Castleton and the beautiful Hope Valley! 💨

This limestone valley was once under a tropical sea, and the landscape is full of fossils of sea creatures that lived here over 350 million years ago 🦀

It's almost off 'our patch' but at just under an hour to get there it is still worth recommending a visit to Quarry Bank (National Trust) if you have time.

I'm embarrassed to say how long it has taken me to visit!

Primarily a cotton mill (still working), there is also Styal village, the mill owner's house, gardens and apprentice lodgings to visit. The guided tour of the Apprentice House was a fascinating insight into the life of the children who used to work in the Mill.

I'll add the route we walked to the comments.

It's good to see more EV charging points going in around the Peak District

We have access to trickle charging at the cottages too!

EV visits boost as new chargers go live.

We're delighted to confirm that public EV charging is now available at our Millers Dale Station car park, Parsley Hay Bike Hire Centre and car park, and for guests at Fieldhead Campsite next to the Moorland Centre, Edale.

The new PodPoint units were funded by BMW UK as part of their Recharge in Nature partnership with National Parks UK.

There is capacity for 4 vehicles at both Millers Dale and Parsley Hay and two vehicles in Edale.

A very Happy New Year to all of our guests, past, present and future.

Certainly a beautiful start to the New Year. Long may it last (although I’m not holding out much hope 😉)

It’s not too late to take in a Christmas Market or two. Haddon Hall artisan markets are here for the next couple of weekends. It’s the first year I’ve been along and I was really impressed with the variety and quality of the stalls. (And to make sure that you are properly in the mood, the Hall is beautifully decorated for the season.)

Magpie Mine is just a couple of miles away. You can visit on foot at any time but on Sunday (10th Sept) there's a chance to learn more of the mine's fascinating history at the annual Heritage Open Day. Hear about the years of boom and bust, the alleged 'murders' and the 'Widow's Curse' on a free guided tour (first tour 11am, last 4pm)

There's a new bus route for the Peak District!!

Now I wouldn't normally get excited about bus routes but this one is for an open-top bus 😍

Starting Saturday 1st July, every 30 minutes, hop on, hop off, the buses will run on figure of eight loop, stopping off at some of the most popular destinations: Chatsworth, Bakewell, Hassop Station and others.

Just £6 per adult - sounds good to me!

Here’s a beautiful example of a Derbyshire well dressing I’ve seen this morning. This is one of the Youlgreave wells - dressed this year with a coronation theme. The colours are so vibrant 💛❤️
One of the other wells describes how it has taken over 200 man (and woman) hours over the course of 4 days to get the dressing finished. So much hard work goes into this fabulous Derbyshire custom.

If you enjoy the sound of birdsong, then join Simon on a walk around Monyash and into a typical Peak District dale. You may hear Song Thrush, Chiffchaff, Wren, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat and/or Redstart - no prior knowledge is necessary and you may learn some tips for identifying songs and calls. Signs of spring in nearby Monyash!

A reminder to motorists in particular, to watch out for frogs, toads and newts making their way to the mere and local garden ponds in order to breed. They tend to be very active at dawn and dusk
